Expanding Your Comic-Reading Horizons
It's easy to let your comic-reading patterns become stagnant after a while. Everyone has their favorite comics that they read every month in print or multiple times a week on the web. These are familiar characters, reassuring faces, and a standard that you can count on. But with that set pattern comes a slippery slope: You stop looking for anything else.

Bitpass, will you use it?

If bitpass takes off and becomes the number one micropayment system would you use it for something? Could micropayments mean a decrease in the amount of free comics on the web and/or will it enable more creators to live off their work?
Is this just rampat capitalism? Some webcomics seem to have a donate button up before their first strip.

July 7, 2003 -- Eddie Campbell, the illustrator of the award-winning graphic novel From Hell, will be appearing in Modern Tales Longplay as part of a month-long focus on Australian creators. The writer and artist of the critically acclaimed Alec: How to be an Artist and head ego behind the eclectic EgoMania magazine will be joined by writer Daren White for 'The Playwright', a series of short stories about "love, lust, fertility and the importance of quality footwear".
The July issue of Longplay -- launching July 7 -- will also showcase work by twenty Australian creators, making it the first time that ModernTales has focused attention on a single country outside of the US -- taking advantage of the truly international 'stage' of the World Wide Web.

An Electric Manga Mirror
Scouring the Internet comic scene, it’s easy to see how prevalent manga imagery and ideals are. Thousands of fan sites are dedicated to Japanese anime, comics and characters. It’s a cultural tidal wave that can easily wash away the uninitiated with way too many facts and trivia about the multitude of worlds that have been created by eastern artists. Whether you’re a fan or not, you can’t deny its influence on popular entertainment.

Jim Zubkavich -- Traitor To The Web?
I was originally going to use this latest column to discuss Hollywood’s current fascination with comics and the inevitable backlash that it will create. However, an e-mail I received asked me some questions that surprised me, and I decided that the explanation would work well here as a new topic.
