News for the First Weekend of January 2007 (UPDATED)
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 5, 2007 - 22:33
I won't be online much this weekend so stay safe out there on the digital badlands...
BUSINESS
- Boing Boing points out this small music label that only charges for songs after they get popular. I wonder if this could/should be applied to webcomics?
Most Read Project
- CBGXtra has a press release that The Dreamland Chronicles "surpassed the one-million reader mark" which sounds like it really should state one million cumulative page views (or possibly uniques but hopefully not the worthless "hits") since its debut in January 2006. Stating you have one million readers implies that you have a million folks checking out each update to a serialized strip and it's clear that TDC does not have that kind of readership.
Interviews
- Sequential Tart has an interview with Barb Lien-Cooper, creator of Gun Street Girl.
DEAD TREES
- Boing Boing has a bunch of links about Doonesbury in its write up of the latest Doonesbury book Heckuva Job Bushie!
JUSTIFY MY HYPE
- All kinds of good new stuff starting at Serializer including Some Guy with a Website from political cartoonist and blogger August J. Pollack.
- Lunchbox, a new webcomic from Ovi Nedelcu.
ALTBRAND At Pittsburgh Con 2002
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 5, 2007 - 15:53
Still the only Con I've "exhibited" at: ALTBRAND had a booth at Pittsburgh's Comicon in 2002. Here's a mention of it in an old article at Border Walker.
Format For Blind Date II
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 5, 2007 - 15:46
A few years ago we did a great "event" called Blind Date which paired up webcomics creators to make a comic together. (I will put up the archive of Blind Date I very soon). With the idea of having a regular schedule of events this year I'd like to organize a Blind Date II for February.
Cleaning Up The Office: 2007 Edition
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 5, 2007 - 15:36
I hate throwing anything out but I'm all out of space! Here's a few random items from conventions that I'll mention online as I discard the offline version - maybe the karma will even out for me!
- A mini from Eric Smith about a rat in a dungeon called WinnWein. Doesn't appear to have come to the web but I believe this site: Glimbit is from the same Eric Smith.
- A mini called Zombie Hunters in Space from M.K. Reed. Not sure if this is the same M.K. Reed but if so here's the website.
- A Border Walker sampler from 2001! Wow that's old... In it are Neal vonFlue's picks for Best Webcomics of 2001: When I Am King by Demian 5, The Awful Science Fair by Jasen Lex, and After Days of Passion by Antony Johnston and Ben Templesmith.
Working on Planet Z!
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 5, 2007 - 13:35
So after a long break from regularly posting any comics (really almost 3+ years) I'm focused on making some again. Putting them up on the web is nice if it gets me any feedback plus like a lot of others it's nice to see your work up on the screen in sequence.
Step one of setting up a website I took care of last year in resurrecting altbrand.com into a functional site again. I'm using a slightly modified version of Greg Stephen's ZWOL script (which is really nice btw) which supports multiple comics on one site.

COMIXPEDIA
- Lots of PW ad slots available for FREE at frightnight.org. These may be worth a bit more in February (more details on that next week).
INTERVIEWS
- Interview with political cartoonist Ted Rall at Suicide Girls (webpage might be NSFW) (LINK via Journalista!)
ADVERTISING
- In addition to the product-placement Gieni-Crosby-penned Wicked Powered, Microsoft has a webcomic called The Enchanted Office up about its new Office product.
- Project Wonderful was down for a blip this morning but appears to be back up. There are a few new sizes of ads available to use thru PW now - 728x90 and 125x125.
JUSTIFY MY HYPE
- I just read Thunder & Lightning at ComicGenesis by Cassandra Matteis and Lara Whitaker. It's got a lot of pretty generic manga-flavored art set in a pretty generic fantasy-flavored world, but the twist in the first chapter involving the werewolf character changed my mind towards it: it's uneven, but I'm hopeful the creators stick with it. Check it out - it won't take long for you to read the whole archives.
- The Beat likes the new webcomic Inanna’s Tears written by Rob Vollmar and illustrated by mpMann.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS
- Christopher Butcher throws out down some markers for separating real publishers from... well those folks who will fail I guess. Comic books do have a fairly low barrier to entry although I've never seen a serious article laying out the capital needs to at least make a realistic attempt at success (although I haven't looked hard for such an article yet - go go lazyweb!) (LINK via Journalista!)
- Comics Make No Sense does to comic books what The Comics Curmudgeon does to comic strips. Nuff said!
- The Ferrett asks if FBOFW's Liz is secretly the most attractive woman in Canada! (er or something similar)
