TWO THOUSAND AND NINE: Was and Wasn't

I've never really had much luck with doing end of the year posts, mostly because I tend to forget what I've consumed/read/watched over the year (my Mom's taken to writing down everything she reads, which is something I'll have to do for 2010), but this year felt especially rich, so ... end of the year post, hurrah!

What Was Awesome in 2009:
1. URASAWAAAAAAAAAA!

Almost Merry Christmas!

Hey, it's Christmas in five days or something! Merry Christmas everybody!

(This is a card I made for Strange Adventures, but we'll just pretend it's for everybody, since I don't have time to do a Christmas card for the internets.)
Man, was this whole month a giant failure in terms of work... freelance and other things distracting me away from my comic-making, and to make matters worse, pretty much all my friends are up and leaving Halifax due to the general awfulness of the animation industry here, so what little extra time I had was spent with them. Sad, sad, sad times. Sucks when people leave.

The Adventures of the Non-Country Music Singing Faith & Tim

My boyfriend and I have reached the crucial 'picking out the flavour of candy that you don't like' point in our relationship. It's nice.

Corn Hole!

Corn Hole's a pretty hilarious name, yes? Here's what it actually is:

Some sort of beanbag game where you toss beanbags through holes into wooden boxes for fabulous prizes! I learned it while visiting the American part of my family in North Carolina (first generation Canadian here. I indulge my American half by watching a lot of the NFL and making fun of Canadian Football) a few years ago. Anyway, the South is not nearly as wacky as Canadians think it is, but they sure do like their wacky names for games that are basically a variation on horseshoes.

Anyone else played this?

My Mom wants hugs for Christmas. ADORABLE.

My mom's Christmas list:

corn hole set:made by a handy man. Bags must be purchased. go to cornhole association for details.
socks
cd of Christian music-not too rocky, a bit mellow
a song sung for us all
a drawing of something beautiful
conversation around the table
hugs

She is definitely not in the spirit of getting lots of stuff which is what Christmas is about anyway. But I'm always delighted when people ask for artwork instead of gifts because HAHAHAHAH CHEAP PRESENT. Yes, handcrafted gifts totally mean more*.

The Fun of Doing Comics

Recently I've been stumbling around with the whole "how do I keep this drawing comics thing fun when it is my job?' thing. I know it sounds kind of weird, because drawing comics IS fun, but once the thing that you used to do "for fun" becomes the thing you do for work ... okay, it's not like it STOPS being fun, I LOVE doing it, but it becomes something ... else.

Reference and cat desks

Starling and I are hard at work on Friends With Boys. Obviously she's working harder than I am, as you can see from this picture. Wow, I have totally become one of those people who posts pictures of their cats online. Living the dream!
The photo printouts on the desk are of an old house a co-worker was renting a room in a while back (he's not any more), and I asked if I could come over to take reference pictures. I've become a bit of a reference whore lately ... suddenly I don't want to draw anything without knowing what it actually looks like. I spent hours photographing the place, and sadly most of the photos have disappeared. ARGH. It was such a perfect house, too. I suspect I thought I'd emptied the camera's memory card when actually I hadn't, and up and deleted things. THBBT.
Here's a graveyard that shows up a lot in the story too:

Demonology 101: A Long Time Ago, on an Internet Far, Far Away...

First of all, someone kindly alerted me to this: Lookit! My artwork is on GoogleMaps! How kickass and awesome is that? It was nifty enough to have a mural for a while (it's now replaced by a mural for Darwyn Cooke's Hunter GN), so this is extra gravy.

I'm a bit exhausted at the moment as I just came back from eating my second turkey (all prententions of wannabe vegetarianism goes out the window around Thanksgiving), but I have a million things to do this week, so I have to post this now or not for a while. Now it is, then. I think I've mentioned a couple times that this past summer it was ten years since I started drawing comics, or rather, ten years since I started drawing my old online comic Demonology 101.

Brain Camp cover

Hey, you guys want to see the cover for that comic I drew that's coming out next year?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! OH GOD THE EYES FOLLOW YOU!!!
