Finished second graphic novel! Next!
Submitted by Faith on September 18, 2008 - 09:28
Alright, The War at Ellsmere is done! Hurrah! *throws confetti* ... but unfortunately not COMPLETELY done, because now I have to get to scanning and lettering and grayscaling, but the actual drawing part ... DONE! I did some creepy promotional artwork to celebrate, all centred around a certain theme which I'm sure you can guess 'cause it's pretty obvious:

Paper question

Really quick question (yes, question week, or something. I am the media elite!): For all those cartoonists out there who draw with brush and ink or a brushpen (not one of those brush markers, because I think the ink is different), what kind of paper do you use?

So. I'm curious. For those out there who write/draw/a combination of the both, what artistic device do you struggle with using or are suspicious of, even though you've seen it used well in the past? Mine would be internal narration in a comic book/graphic novel, even though I've seen it used magnificently in books like Skim and The Last Frontier (and horribly in many many many many many other books). But it's weird because I don't feel like internal narration by the main character (or any character) should be considered wrong or a cheat, I'm just very ... suspicious of it.
Huh? Fringe?

Why are all the ads for the upcoming J.J. Abrams show Fringe unrelentingly lame? Why do they mostly consist of slo-mo shots of the cast, hair billowing in the wind (or in the case of ex-Dawson's Creek orphan Joshua Jackson, stubble billowing in the wind), while the camera circles then endlessly, and everyone wears really confused expressions? One ad was an extended shot of the three (assumedly) main characters getting out of their car and walking, (in slow motion, natch) across a parking lot. I think.
Website update + Word on the Street Halifax

I updated/revamped my webpage the other night. I desperately needed to get that old artwork (from 2006!) off the front page, and put up something that was a little more representational of how I draw now. Yeaaahhh. It's really only half done.
Fortunately I won't be voting.

Big Spender

So I had a tremendously wonderful thing happen last week, and celebrations had to occur. Here's what I did:
1) Went out for sushi, got the tempura. I love the tempura. There's something about fried veggies and seafood that I just crave (although it doesn't hold a candle to shrimp tempura sushi, which is the most delicious of all food and I wish to someday be buried in a vat of it so I can eat my way out), but I never get it because it adds too much to the bill. NOT YESTERDAY THOUGH. Yesterday I went crazy and spent that extra $6.
Done! ... but not done.

I technically finished drawing The War at Ellsmere today, a whole MONTH ahead of schedule (139 pages since January). But after talking a bit with my editor, I've decided to add a scene, so back to the drawing board. And then I get to do the joyous part of comic creating: scanning! And lettering! Ugh.
Confession: I like saying "my editor," because it makes me think I have this person who lives in my closet that pops out every now and then when I need feedback. It's fun.
twitter-in'
Submitted by Faith on August 25, 2008 - 18:29
I got a twitter, for all the one line thoughts that pop into my head. I always rush to LJ to post them, because they seem terribly interesting, but when they're all typed out on the journal page ... well, one line posts look sort of sad. So I don't post them. Thus, TWITTER! Yay! (Note: twitters will not be posted here. This is an LJ for THOUGHTFUL posts of GREAT MAGNITUDE. Or, y'know, posts about pretty boys, cartoons and what I discovered in my nose while picking it this morning. Whatever.)
Ten Pages from the end.

I'm ten pages from the end of The War at Ellsmere, which makes me really happy (128 pages since January, a big jump up from the nine months it took me to do 96 pages of Zombies Calling). I've been working on it full-time since the end of May, when an animation project that was supposed to start in June got pushed back to ... oh, god knows. Latest I've heard is September. Anyway, we shan't dwell on that.
