The ComixTalk Interview with Blank Label Comics

We took the best of the readers' questions and mixed in some of our own to conduct this interview with the six current members of Blank Label Comics: Howard Tayler (Schlock Mercenary), Steve Troop (Melonpool), Paul Southworth (Ugly Hill), Paul Taylor (Wapsi Square), David Willis (Shortpacked) and Greg Dean (Real Life).

Call For Questions For Blank Label Comics

Back in February of this year, we hosted the results of a ComixTalk community interview with the members of the indepedent creators collective, Blank Label Comics. Given that this is an end-of-the-year kind of issue for ComixTalk, I thought it would be great to do another interview with the members of BLC so we could book-end the year between them.

Moreover, although there has been a good deal of press on Halfpixel, the new collective formed by Scott Kurtz and former BLC members Brad Guigar, Dave Kellett and Kris Straub, there is still plenty to catch up on with the six current members of BLC: Howard Tayler, David Willis, Paul Southworth, Paul Taylor, Steve Troop and Greg Dean. Please post your questions here -- I'll collect them on December 21st and send them out for answers with an eye to publishing the full story here in January 2008.

Filling In The Blanks: A Short Interview with Howard Tayler

Earlier this week ComixTalk posted an interview with the new line-up of Halfpixel (Scott Kurtz, Kris Straub, Brad Guigar and Dave Kellett). Since as part of the creation of the new Halfpixel, Kris, Brad and Dave left the Blank Label Comics collective, I wanted to get a comment from someone on the Blank Label team. Howard Tayler, the creator of Schlock Mercenary, was kind enough to answer quickly some questions about this week's changes and the future of Blank Label Comics.

Schlock Mercenary: 1, Starslip Crisis: 0

Round 1 of the Starslip Crisis crossover Alterverse War is heating up, with the Steel Duck from Melonpool taken captive even as the Touch-And-Go from Schlock Mercenary pummels the museum ship Fuseli after a devastating plasma salvo. With its primary starslip arch destroyed, will the Fuseli be able to defeat a ship whose shields can withstand a star going nova?!

The Alterverse War is a crossover event involving more than thirty sci-fi webcomics. Even though I'm writing it, I'm using fanboy logic and stats provided by the participating webcartoonists to make the fights as fair (if there is such a thing) as possible. With all the other high-powered entrants in the game, Starslip Crisis may not (probably won't) come out on top!

Check it out every Saturday at Starslip Crisis!

Mega Sci-Fi Crossover at Starslip Crisis

I'm doing a brand-new Saturday-only storyline in full color that I hope gets a good turnout from the sci-fi webcomics crowd. It takes place in the year 3438, before the events of Starslip Crisis. Vanderbeam has been captain of the Fuseli for a few years, and has recently taken on Cutter Edgewise, a former pirate, as the navigator of the finest starship art museum in the galaxy.

Okay, who cares about the setup. It's going to feature interwebcomic space battles. It's one huge fanboy crossover in the vein of "who would win -- the Enterprise or a Star Destroyer?"

If you have a sci-fi webcomic with a spaceship in it, you can submit your ship and crew to be involved! The form to fill out is on the guide page here. Read the terms, and join in! And check back every Saturday to see the plot developments!

Climactic Conclusion to Yearlong Story Arc at Evil Inc

The next nine days will change the future of Evil Inc. forever.

In a story arc that started the day Evil Atom was forced out of the company he single-handedly created, the new CEO of Evil Inc -- a superHERO -- has had to grapple with making the company profitable. Failure would cause the demise of the Legion of Justice -- which invested heavily in Evil Inc. But success would, of course, mean aiding and abetting super-criminals. Last week ended with a mysterious explosion and this week began with a memorial service.

The next nine days are not to be missed. If you're not a regular reader of Evil Inc. there's no better time to start. Jump in here and buckle your seat belts.

Starslip Crisis by Kris Straub, reviewed by Erg

Very few comics can reference Men in Black, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and painter Thomas Eakins in a single story line, much less a story line that includes extreme violence, puns, slapstick, and touching self sacrifice. And even fewer can do it in such a way that is so seamlessly professional and on tone as any work in print or on the web. But that is what you get 5 days a week in Kristofer Straub’s Starslip Crisis.
