Mecca Cola #2

People in webcomics are kind of annoying. I just got my first "hate" mail last week. It's from someone who makes a comic, I garuntee you've heard of. Anyway to "Mr X", I don't know why the Easter Bunny's head is split open, or why he's talking about Mecca Cola. You're right, "it makes no sense". I left these explanations out should I wish to develop storylines to this comic at a later time. Or, maybe they never will be covered at all. Why does everything need to be explained anyway?

The funny thing about drawing in flash, is I thought I'd be able to crank out comics at a daily pace by not having to redraw the characters each panel. No doubt, it saves time in drawing characters, but I still spend a lot of time fiddling with dialog boxes. I guess there really is no escaping the fact it takes about an hour to write all the dialog and position it on the screen.

I responded to the only constructive bit in the email. There was more, about about lineweights, and "How to draw" stuff. I ignored that. It was obvious he hasn't drawn in flash. There are limitations to what can be done. Maybe Disney can animate 1000's of cell drawings, but for me it isn't feasable.

EDIT: Gordon, good point. That's exactly the situation here.

At a panel, Chris Ware (or was it Seth?) bemoaned how in fine art, when someone doesn't understand it, they think of it as a failing in themself -- but in comics, when someone doesn't understand it, they think of it as a failing in the comic.

Multiplex is a twice weekly humor comic about the staff of the Multiplex 10 Cinemas and the movies that play there.

Everyone's a critic!

That's the problem with opening your comic up to the public, I guess. Whether on the web or in print, once it's there for people to read, some are going to like it and some won't. This guy's got every right to voice his opinion even if - as it seems from your post - he's done so in a rather immature fashion. If that's the case, it's particularly disappointing. Since you say he produces his own comic, you'd think he'd know the importance of being constructive or just keeping shtum.

Best advice is to ignore anything that's not constructive. Adopt a thick skin or take a tip from those actors who refuse to read their own reviews. Sure, he has a right to his opinion. But you've also got a right to put whatever you want in your own comic - whether it makes sense to him or not!
