Washington is ON the hockey BANDWAGON folks. I'd turn the site RED but why don't you imagine it that way instead. Today's INKTANK spoke to my inner caffeinated soul. It might as well have featured a little angel and little devil on my shoulders delivering the same dialogue...

CONVENTIONS: Bags and Boards blog has an article speculating on Comicon moving from San Diego to Los Angeles. They think there are signs it may happen.

iWEBCOMICS: Bleeding Cool blog reports that a new beta version of Longbox, the comics reader-and-collector-and-social-networking software, will be available to the public this weekend. Prior versions of Longbox were in private beta..
CONTEST: The Escapist website webcomic contest has a couple of additional judges you might recognize: Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics) and Brian Clevinger (8 Bit Theatre). The deadline for entries closed February 28th and winners will be chosen the week of March 8th.
JUSTIFY THE HYPE: The Comics Are Evil blog spotlights an old skool webcomic, The Parking Lot is Full, by Pat Spacek and Jack McLaren.

At the tail end of February Chris Crosby announced that he had closed a deal to buy out the shares of Darren "Gav" Bleuel and Nate Stone in Keenspot Entertainment. Although Bleuel and Stone are to provide technical support to Keenspot through the summer, from now on Keenspot will be strictly the Crosby show. And following on the heels of this announcement, Keenspot has moved to offer to its roster of creators a new advertising split. In this brief interview we catch up with Crosby on these recent announcements, the 8th anniversary of Keenspot itself, and the 9th anniversary of Crosby's webcomic Superosity.

I think in the digital world it's probably wise to always keep up with how other forms of expression are adapting to the web. Comics in some ways has been far ahead but it doesn't mean there's not learnin' to be had from music and movies and whatnot.

HEADLINES

If you missed it check out Comics Worth Reading's interview with Chris Crosby over Diamond's rejection of Keenspot's participation in this year's Free Comic Book Day. Crosby's various comics entities have participated in FCBD for several years now so it is surprising that they will not be allowed to participate in this year's event. If the given explanation are true, however, it's just more evidence of how insular the thinking of the monthly comic
bookpamphlet industry is by restricting their promotional event to existing direct market titles.
BUSINESS
- Satstu.com has an article on the state of the not-growing newspaper comic strip business. It also has a link to Chicken Wings which is a webcomic aimed at the aviation industry. In 2008 I'm going to predict that if there's enough public interest in something there will be at least one successful webcomic about it. How much public interest in a subject is enough? That's something I hope we can all get a better handle on this year - maybe with actual numbers and demographics.
CONGRATULATIONS
- Congrats to Jeph and Christi on their engagement. And hope everyone caught Jeph's pretty cool little reader-participation holiday comic. My gift to the happy couple is that something happens in Questionable Content this year. I keed, I keed...
JUSTIFY MY HYPE
- New Years Day, Goats wrapped up its multi-verse saga with Jon in charge of hell? The first comic in the next storyline is up now... Don't let anyone kid you - combining consistently funny updates with a (somewhat) coherent storyline is hard. Throw in some actual character development - that's ISO 9000 there, baby! Last year, Goats began to hit a stride of humor and unpredictablilty in a just-plain-fun story - let's hope Rosenberg can do it again in 2008.
- A long way off but a firm date in May for the wedding of Brent and Jade should shake things up at PvP. PvP is more sitcom than storyline but every now and then Scott Kurtz successfully mixes up the elements of this long-running strip.
- SMBC is brillant. I love the punchline picture / set-up text jokes (kind of a reverse humor-fu) - here's one of my recent favorites with the added wha! of mixing D&D and sex. Probably too PG-13 to ever fit comfortably in newspapers but somehow it'd be great to sneak this into mid-America's breakfast reading.
COMRADES IN ARMS
- CONGA: The collective network of great artists is a pretty nifty site - not sure if its a collective or just a site spotlighting artists but either way its full of wonderfully cool art.

HEADLINES
- Scott McCloud's brilliant The Right Number is now free (previously it was available for purchase through Bitpass). Go read, enjoy and then email Scott to encourage him to finish it.
- I haven't seen more updates on the cease&desist style letters from Todd Goldman's attorneys that FLEEN reported on recently, but it does seem clear that the immediate effect has been to revive the Todd Goldman Copied Dave Kelly's Artwork story and spread news of it well beyond the world of (web)comics. UPDATE: Cartoon Brew has an up-to-the-minute, snark-filled update on Todd Goldman.

MAGAZINE
- Terrence Marks did a five part series on married creators this month - be sure to check out all of the interviews: Tod and Corey Marie Parkhill, Andrew Farago and Shaenon Garrity, Scott Kellogg and Kathryn Garrison Kellogg, Mason and Amber Williams, and Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier.
- We also have a new feature from Sebastian Parsons that speculates about the motivations for creating webcomics. And in our regular columns, Derik Badman examines of a page of Jaime Hernandez's Flies on the Ceiling for Panels & Pictures and Neil Cohn (along with illustrations from Tym Godek) compares speech/thought bubbles and panels for Comics Theory 101.
HEADLINES
- Reinder Dijkhuis has an interesting essay on Project Wonderful. My take on Project Wonderful is that it's a wonderful platform for a web-based advertising system but what remains to be seen is whether it turns into an advertising service. A service needs some entity interacting with traditional media buyers (usually advertising agencies) to sell them ad space on the platform. Whether that's PW creator Ryan North who takes that on or some other arrangement, it's a piece of the puzzle necessary to the long-term success of PW. Don't get me wrong though - I'm a big fan of PW right now and I'm optimistic about it.

- Digital Strips has an interview with Chad Diez, the former artist on The Pet Professional and now working on the relaunched (NSFW) The Sophisticated Pig.
- Earlier this month Digital Strips also had an interview with Wes Molebash on the release of his new book, You’ll Have That, Vol. 2 (DS also reviewed it here).

- You guys all read the Websnark already, but be sure to check out his post about the great sci-fi strip Crimson Dark. I've been reading this since literally Day 3 and it's very good.
- Another Websnark post about which I can agree is this one that says nice things about Bobby Crosby's +EV. Comixpedia reviewed +EV back in October 2006.

WIKIPEDIA WATCH
- Kris Straub a la Andy Kaufman of the webcomics pulls a fast one on a trigger happy wikipedia posse. It's just a wonderfully twisted public prank that actually demonstrates this whole Wikipedia webcomic trainwreck we've watched over the last year or so (it really has been going on for that long). And it got lots of folks talking about it. (apparently a wikipedian caught wind of Kris' post and reinstated the Starslip Crisis entry.)
- T Campbell is going to be interviewing the grand poobah of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales. Now might be a good time to suggest some questions to him.

- Gilead Pellaeon reviews the first episode of PvP: The Series. Pellaeon watched the full season of CAD: The Animated Series and draws some comparison between the two projects.

- FILTHY LIES creator Enigma was lined up to create a comic for Anna Nichol's website called Anna Nichol Stripped. Bad timing, eh? Check out the work that was already done here and check out the most recent Filthy Lies, kicking off the inevitable Anna Nichol Smith jokes.
- Chris and Bobby Crosby have some comic ideas they are looking for artists for: "...because Owen can only draw so many pages a day before exploding into a mass of tubes and wires, we're on the lookout for new artists. - The community-driven webcomic Infinity on 30 Credits a Day is choosing a logo. I have no idea if the resulting comic will be any good but it's a fun project to watch unfold.
