Last year Tastefully Done showed the world what it would be like if their favourite webcomic characters bared all in aid of Cancer Research. This year the tables have turned and webcomic artists have bared all in aid of Cancer Research.
With the talents of Kristofer Straub, James Turner, Jodie Azhar, Digital Strips Team, Ben Stirling, Fred Grisolm, Whitney Robinson, Ryan Estrada, Chris Thomas & James Walker, Jon Scrivens, Meghan Murphy, Jared von Hindman and cover by Corey Marie Parkhill baring all for a great cause. Webcomic artists at their finest, with their clothes off, is hopefully gonna be an utterly delightful success like last year.

INTERVIEWS
- Eh it's from last month, but I forgot to link to it. A pretty entertaining if short interview with Warren Ellis, around the release of his Black Summer comic from Avatar. For all of the scattershot musing and ideas Ellis blasts across cyberspace every FREAKIN' day I wish he could channel a little bit of it into a serialized webcomic. (Is Freak Angels ever going to...well get its freak on?)
REVIEWS
- Jack Carter reviews Boxcar Astronaut by Marc Lapierre and Jeff Carter and Kidnapped By Gnomes by Kathy Peterson. I've read and heartily recommend Boxcar Astronaut - which is almost Calvin & Hobbes-esque in its ability to capture innocent wonder at the world.
JUSTIFY MY HYPE
- Someone pointed out Idiot Comics on a thread yesterday. It is largely good although as much funny-wha?! as funny-ha-ha... Definitely worth checking out.
Updating the Feed Lists

When we switched to Drupal one of the nice things I was able to set up was pulling in the RSS feeds of other sites to Comixpedia. That way we do less "link" blogging here but you can still get a sense of what's going on in webcomicland from the syndicated headlines.

The March of the Collectives

A collective, loosely defined, is any sustained grouping of webcomic creators. What they do together varies greatly from group to group. Some are largely a peer group offering each other critical feedback and encouraging support. Others throw in cross-promotion for each others' work. Some build a collective brand with logos, advertising and a central website. Some share business experience and expertise in areas as varied as merchandise, books, conventions, hosting and website creation.
And what did I find from my research? There's a tremendous number of collectives out there (and that I never want to attempt another "survey" article again). And, oh yeah, checking out collectives can be a great way to find excellent new comics.

Comixpedia's People Of Webcomics List For 2006
It's the third annual Comixpedia People Of Webcomics List. This was the hardest one yet to compile. There's a lot of webcomics and a lot of people doing interesting things in and around webcomics. This list, as in past years, is an odd effort to compare apples and oranges: artistic achievement, audience popularity, technical achievement, business savvy, news-making impact all go into the mix.

Finally, the impending return of Serializer - the art comic outpost in the Modern Tales kingdom - is near (Eric says end of October). This would be the last of the MT sites to return after server crash/upgrade issues. A partial list of the artists on the roster for the relaunch include:

MOST READ
Joystiq, a popular videogame blog has a weekly poll on its readers favorite webcomics. Naturally these are all gamer webcomics but I was surprised to see in the most recent poll that Press Start To Play is essentially tied with Penny Arcade in popularity and another webcomic I hadn't read before, Fanboys In Love, was in third place.
CONVENTIONS
SPX Update: Jeph Jacques (Questionable Content) will be sharing a table with Malki (Wondermark). Fred Grisolm (Hate Song) also will be there.
BUSINESS
Andy Bell (Creatures In My Head) is having a launch party for his Zliks toys on Friday 13th in New York City.
Good news at the Fortress of Dumbrellatude: R Stevens is looking for help with his t-shirt n' swag shipping empire.
Exciting tasks include folding t-shirts, filling orders, counting things, moderate computer use and discussing the paranormal at length. Perks include being away from the general public and occasional free goodies. Also, money.

We're closing in on NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and like others I am thinking about giving it a try this year...
Funny, but this was exactly like a lot of my sports practices as a kid. Only for baseball...

News
I started a thread to discuss the Platinum-Drunk Duck deal here - I added links to other discussions in the comments if you're interested in reading more about it.
Aaron MacGruder AWOL from Boondocks return. Or so the Washington Post reports. The Comics Reporter notes that the Dallas Morning News also has a good story on this subject.
The Comic Reporter also points to a deal between McClatchy-Tribune and PopMatters.com to carry PopMatters.com stories on McClatchy's MCT Campus wire service for college and highschool newspapers. PopMatters.com was founded in 1999 by Sarah Zupko and also carries several webcomics on its site.
Interviews
Wizard interviewed Jon Rosenberg (creator of Goats) yesterday. I just want to highlight this part because I think Jon's answer makes a lot of sense:
What professional title do you prefer: webcomicker, webcomics artist, creator or what's the standard these days? Or is there one?
ROSENBERG: When people ask me what I do, I tell them I draw comics. Titles are a pretty silly thing, I don't know if there is a standard but I'm sure it is a topic of heated debate on some message board somewhere.
The people who concern themselves with those sorts of things, I find, would do better to focus on their comics.

I missed it but Mitch Clem is updating NN2S again. Huh-zah!
Over at CBR, Meaghan Quinn plugs the new webcomic from Petie Shumate, Girl/Robot. G/R is kind of a one-note affair (girl says/does something, robot takes it literally, hijinks/disaster ensues) but so far Shumate is consistently cracking me up with it. I'd give it a try if you haven't already.
Everything Else
Gilead's got a post on Phil Kahn's I'm Just Drinking vidcast - webcomics and alcohol... who'd thunk it? I watched part of it last night - not bad and Phil does a decent job of actually demonstrating how to make the drinks which is good since that's probably the key part of the show. :)

It will be in stores on October 18, but this is the last week for comic book retailers to place their orders. So get your local store on the phone now! Just yell "Diamond Order Code: AUG063478 (Previews page 323)"; this helps somehow.

Also thought I'd mention that despite the magazine hiatus for the summer there were some new interviews you might have missed in all the guest blogging: David Wright (Todd and Penguin), Chris Shadoian (Popcorn Picnic), and Fred Grisolm (Hate Song).
And I added a bunch of buttons to posts that let's you recommend Comixpedia stories to digg and other social/Web 2.0 sites. Basically if you want to draw the web-o-sphere's attention to a Comixpedia post click 'em and follow the instructions at the other site. Digg.com for example puts stories with the most user votes (called "diggs") on its front page.
Finally, I'm moving the toplist (comixpedia.net) to a new server so tomorrow or the day after there'll be a little dns hiccup which will probably mess up the stats a bit this week. I apologize but I couldn't figure out how to avoid it. In any event, the new server is managed so it should be as good or better performance then the current one.
