C'mon weekend! Okay this first story struck me as a great project. Jennifer Ouellette writes about a collective effort to create a webcomic telling the amazing story of 20-something Dutch primary school teacher, Hanny van Arkel, who discovered a strange blue/green smudge on an image of what was otherwise a standard spiral galaxy now referred to as "Hanny's Voorwerp." The full comic will be released at Dragon-Con in Atlanta, Georgia, this fall.
MILESTONES: Wow, it's the FIFTH anniversary of Gordon McAlpin's Multiplex. Congrats! If you're not reading this smart comic about the crew working at a local multiplex definitely check it out. A wonderful combination of character-driven and movie culture comedy.
iWEBCOMICS: Lauren Davis notes the release of a new version of the controversial webcomic app from Dale Zak. Noted without comment from me today as this is a topic that requires more time than I have this morning.
THE MORE YOU KNOW: Yesterday we noted Paul Bryant Johnson gave a class at a summer webcomics camp. Today he posted online his presentation on "Finding the Balance Between Words, Pictures and Time in Making Comics."

- The Geeks With Curves blog praises Wapsi Square by Paul Taylor as a comic with strong female characters and fluid and professional art.
- (We got) The Beat blog plugs The Moon Prince by Kevin Mutch as its webcomic weekend reading.
- Lauren Davis points to the now halted journal webcomic Ellerbisms by Marc Ellerby noting that "[Ellerby's] ability to recognize the narrative in his own life, really resonates with me."

- Peter Conrad writes "I took down attemptednotknown.com last year because of some hackers who used the site for nefarious purposes. I've relaunched it with way more content, and I'm uploading stuff every week now!" Peter is another long-time webcomic creator who I'll always remember for creating Zeenster - an app to read comics on the Palm OS.
- Tommie Kelly writes "I did the webcomics Road Crew and From Rags To Rockstars. I have a new webcomic... There are about 70 strips online at the time of emailing and it updates five times a week. Mon to Fri... It's called Something Wonderful and it deals with religion, beliefs, new age, spirituality and Mac owners among other things."
- Stephanie O'Donnell writes "I'm Stephanie O'Donnell, artist for the webcomic Perfect Agent. It is written by Greg Carter (creator of Abandon and Love Is In The Blood). It started last year and we're now 2 full stories in."

- Also in new webcomic convention on the block news, Intervention added award winning Sci-Fi author (and soon to be Webcomic author) Ben Bova to its inaugural lineup. Bova, Rob Balder, and Bill Holbrook will be debuting their new online webcomic collaboration at Intervention called Duel in the Somme.

I got back from Taiwan last week and managed to switch back to Eastern Time Zone okey-dokey for a couple of days but then WHAMMO... I got a case of delayed jet lag I guess? Anyhow, that's why I'm up at 4:30 in the AM.
REVIEWS: El Santo has reviewed all of the webcomic category nominees for this year's Eisners and offered up his predictions. And hey, El Santo also reviewed Marilith (the Hudson Hawk of webcomics?).
EVENT: Delos reports that Dialogue-Free Comics Day went off well - here's the entries.
INTERVIEW: Pink Raygun has a story about the webcomic Contropussy, including how it got its name.
ADVICE: Jeph Jacques, creator of Questionable Content, offers some straight-forward advice to those thinking of starting a webcomic.
MAILBAG
- Stephanie O'Donnell wrote about her webcomic (she arts, Greg Carter writes) Perfect Agent which now has two full stories in the archives.
- Shaun McLaughlin wrote about his comic Cheapjack Shakespeare, now updated daily on the web. The comedy follows the adventures of a college Shakespeare Company as it falls apart over a summer. Members get involved in infidelity, get struck by lightning and get in fights with unappreciative members of the audience who heckle them.
- Dmitri Jackson writes that he has a new webcomic at USARiseUp Magazine called Marty's Diner -- a slice-of-life look at the waiters and customers of a downtown city restaurant. Unfortunately for Jackson, it's hard to find the comic on the magazine's website and it doesn't look like there's anyway to find, let alone navigate, the archives of the comic.
El Santo vs. The Vampire Women: Abandon: First Vampire

We begin our story with Laila McCarthy and her trusty pal Kimmy on the run from a crack squadron of the world’s most metrosexual vampires. When they finally corner the two girls, it turns out that they have a fairly reasonable request for Professor Laila: translate two tablets of hieroglyphics, or the girl gets it. Laila, instead, goes for Option C. Short of telling the guys that the tablets belong in a museum and not being a big fan of fellas with frosted tips, she hacks her attackers down with a big ol’ samurai sword. Hey, what’s the use of carrying a sword around if you’re never gonna use it?
The battle won, Laila turns her attention to the tablets. The writing turns out to be a love story between two ancient Sumerian demons. Their forbidden love, we later find out, is predicted to bring about the end of time. After some gratuitous girl-on-girl action (which is, tastefully, left mostly to the imagination), Laila becomes pensive. For, you see, she may be mild mannered professor Laila McCarthy to her friends and colleagues, but in real life she is none other … *gasp* … Lamashtu, the first vampire!
Abandon: First Vampire is written Greg Carter and illustrated by Elliot Dombo.

Daily Cartoonist has links to a new release of another WordPerfect Wordpress plug-in for webcomics management. I really hope someone writes up a nice review of the expanding number of WordPresserfect-webcomic tools.
Not entirely sure how this works, but Greg Carter started a webcomics group for twitter.

Where's WOWIO?

A little more on the pending Platinum - WOWIO hookup. Comic Book Resources reports that WOWIO initiated the negotiations at the behest of their balky investors and that Platinum will probably be paying for WOWIO in stock. Wire stories confirm that negotiations are ongoing (not final) and that the current hope is to concludethe transaction in the third quarter (I read this not as striking a deal in the third quarter but completing the acquisition or merger in the third quarter. Striking the deal -- reaching terms -- would most likely occur very soon).
Greg Carter encourages everyone to read their WOWIO contracts closely. I second that. Let me be clear - I don't want to cast aspersions on the people at Platinum -- they are businessmen and while there are allegations of late payments circulating around I don't have any independent confirmation of that right now. But having had a chance to observe Platinum for awhile now it's pretty clear that their business model is to own and license IP. Nothing inherently wrong with that but it's different than a publishing business model. WOWIO seems to be in the business of publishing (digital but still essentially publishing) and Platinum really is not. If Platinum buys WOWIO my expectation is that WOWIO will shift its business model to owning and licensing IP.
On a semi-related note -- what's going on with Platinum's Comic Book Challenge for this year -- the Platinum website says to "Come back June 27th and see Who's Next!" So, um, it's July 1st already...
