A Doemain of Our Own announces change from online to print
Submitted by Linda Howard Valentine on October 3, 2007 - 19:39
Cartoonist Susan Rankin has recently announced that her long-running anthropomorphic strip A Doemain of Our Own will be changing from a free (mostly) weekly online comic to a periodic print comic in November. This change in format will not affect Rankin's collaboration with John Robey on NeverNever.
Quickie

Real life, the eternal bane of the web cartoonist, has got hold of me as I move into my new house, so I'm going to have to go with a quick recommendation rather than the usual ramble.
The Web Is Not Enough
Submitted by The Gneech on February 26, 2007 - 14:44
Once upon a time, in the dim, dark past of 1999, "having a webcomic" was its own gimmick. There were not that many of us, and most of us who were there were fairly hardcore about it.
The End, the No End, and the End Someday

In his regular column "Permanent Damage" on Comic Book Resources, Steven Grant has a detailed and interesting analysis of the "storytelling arc," particularly in regards to how it impacts TV shows like "Lost" where the mystery is the story, and how there has to be a payoff or viewers (and r
That Buzzing Noise
Submitted by The Gneech on February 16, 2007 - 11:08
As I'm sure people who know me will attest, I am always fretting about wanting to create "buzz". I don't know if it's my inner attention whore or what, but I'm always fighting off the vague suspicion that all the work I pour into my comics generates little more than a shrug from the world at large.
News For Monday, January 29, 2007 (UPDATED)
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 29, 2007 - 11:07
Wow - it was a huge weekend for webcomics!
AWARDS
- The WCCA nominations are out (full list here). Webcomic creators can vote for their choice up until February 11th. This year, the awards are to be announced at MegaCon in Florida on February 19th.
- We also started a discussion on the weekend on which new comics from 2006 that didn't get a nomination for Outstanding Newcomer might have deserved one. Tell us what you think here.
- DAJB points out that the U.K.'s Eagle Awards are upon us again, and that they have a category for webcomics.
- The Comics Reporter notes that new at this year's Joe Shuster awards will be the Oustanding Canadian Web Comic Creator Award. The Shuster awards take place June 9th. Submission for nominations are open.
- Talk About Comics points to a report that the short film Everything Will Be OK directed by Don Hertzfeldt and based on his webcomic Anesthetics, won the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival.
- The National Cartoonist Society is accepting nominations for it awards. Nominations are due by February 23rd. Apparently, you do not need to be an NCS member to be eligible for an NCS award. However, they do not have an award for webcomics nor do they seem to consider publication online as part of their criteria for qualified nominations. I wonder when that will change...
EVENTS
- I posted the Blind Date II pairings this weekend. If you forgot to sign up and want to participate I will try to facilitate additional pairings on a rolling basis today. Go to the thread and post a comment if you want to join up.
MAGAZINE
- Grant Thomas writes about putting a webcomic into print and discusses some of the differences between the print-on-demand and the do-it-yourself approaches.
- Xaviar Xerexes presents a look at Big Panda, a webcomics host and portal from the mists of history with comments from a long list of creators, including Chris Crosby and Darren "Gav" Bleuel, John Allison, Eight, John Robey, Josh Lesnick, David Willis and more.
BUSINESS
- MSNBC is replacing Fox Trot (and possibly The Boondocks) with new comics. They're conducting a poll on it. This is MSNBC's webcomic lineup we're talking about - probably a pretty high-profile placement (I don't have any actual data on traffic though). Unfortunately it appears they are only considering work from Uclick! - probably because of an exclusivity term in a contract.
HOW-TO
- Bryant Paul Johnson posted a very useful "how to" on how he makes his webcomic Teaching Baby Paranoia.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS
- Bid to Win a Guest-Star Appearance in PC Weenies #1000.
- Love is Psychosexual wraps up on Adultwebcomics.
- Speaking of adult webcomics, check out the almost but not quite SFW (so far) There's Always Porn by Bob Sugar and Wiz Rollins.
- Webcomics In Print presents its weekly round-up of webcomics in print.
- Comics Worth Reading flags the release of the second Penny & Aggie book.
- The Comics Reporter points to a Washington Post story on Suicide Rabbit, a webcomic popular in China.
- T Campbell urges webcomics creators to vote responsibly.
- The Blank Label Comics group snagged nine WCCA nominations.
Biggie Panda: Old Skool Webcomics
One way to think of the history of webcomics is as the big bang of comics. At the beginning there were far fewer webcomic creators and they were (virtually) clustered together much more tightly (hence all the wistful talk of "webcomic community") and then, if the inflationary webcomicology theory is correct, those early webcomic exploded into the universe of comics online we have today.

Want to Blog For Comixpedia?
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 16, 2007 - 23:11
As we head into 2007 I'm fairly positive about the course Comixpedia is on. We're heading for another software upgrade within Drupal that will let me do some cool things (probably end of January) and I'm working on getting new life and a little more content into the magazine. Lots of stuff I'm excited about.
But I'd like to get some other people involved in the daily blogging here on the front page. It's already helped that so many people post "user blogs" every day, but in terms of front page posts (and spotting user blogs for promotion to the front page) I think things would be better with at least a few more people participating.
Why blog for Comixpedia? Actually I'd like to know the answer to that myself :)
In all seriousness Comixpedia has several good things going for it: it's the oldest ongoing webcomic news and commentary site around, it has a pretty decent share of the "reading about webcomics" audience (and our news is syndicated at the webcomics hub The Webcomic List), and it has an audience filled not only with webcomics-savvy fans, but creators, publishers, and others contributing in significant ways to webcomics.
I'm not looking for clones of myself, but other interesting voices to add to the daily mix. I'm looking for all kinds of people from any kind of background. Ideally we're also looking for someone(s) who can submit 2-3 posts a week and would stick with it for at least 6 months (say til July).
If you're interested here's how to apply - I'd like anyone who wants front page status here at Comixpedia to post a comment here with anything they want to write about why they'd make a good addition to the front page here at Comixpedia. Then over the rest of the month (up to and including Jan. 31) write at least three "try-out" posts using your user blog (write more if you want). A "try-out" post should be the kinds of things you'd want to write on the front page. BE SURE TO TAG these posts with this tag - "new blogger" (in topics) so I know they are posts for consideration for front page status. I'll post a round-up of links to all of the try-out posts on Feb. 1st so I can get feedback from the rest of Comixpedia on who should get front page status.
This Bruno Is A Barbarian
More horrible than Hagar, greedier than the King of Id, Ian McDonald's Bruno the Barbarian has been storming the gates of webcomicdom for more than seven years now.Blending high Robert E. Howard style fantasy with cartoonish comedy, Ian McDonald began his long-running webcomic Bruno the Bandit in 1998.
