Around the World in 4 Blogs and a Webcomic
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on May 14, 2008 - 10:04
The best of the rest I found today:
Chris "Awesome" Arrant interviews Rich "Rocket Man" Stevens (creator of Diesel Sweeties).
The "SCIENCE!" Scienteers interview Josh "JAM ON IT" Lesnick (creator of Girly).
Tom "Sputnik" Spurgeon reviews the all-ages Flight Explorer, edited by Kazu "King Kong" Kibuishi.
Susie C. links to 8 great comics by college students or college graduates (wait... that's really not narrowing it down, is it?)
And this is pretty funny - today's Fanboys features the cast of Seinfeld playing D&D.

Updates On Entries in the Ill-Fated Webcomic Directory Project?
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on July 24, 2007 - 14:31
I built a "library" of webcomics and creators back in the fall of 2005 which I put into beta before realizing it was too much editorial work to deal with and the same information could be better provided through the community edited webcomic wiki - COMIXPEDIA.
Nevertheless looking back on the assortment of names collected (some from me, some sent in from you) I wonder if anyone has any significant updates on these creators 18 months later. Maybe we should interview some of them?

No More "Webcomics" Suck Stories Please
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on June 10, 2007 - 11:35
I just saw a draft article from someone (not intended for Comixpedia I think - just something someone was looking for feedback on) which was basically the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back" for me.
I'm sure you've seen the gist of this proposed article in countless posts for almost as long as there's been comics posted on the web:
- Webcomics (or most of 'em) are crap;
- The Webcomics Community (or some sub-set of people making webcomics, reading webcomics, commenting on webcomics, etc) is crap;
- There's no such thing as webcomics - everything's comics;
- People in "webcomics" are too focused on "webcomics" and not the "outside" world; and
Well, that probably covers the broad themes of such rants. Let's just think about these points for a second (click "read more" to read on!):

- NPR interviewed Berke Breathed about his new kids book Mars Needs Moms.

JUSTIFY MY HYPE
- xkcd - which may be the most popular webcomic around now - has an ongoing storyline this week.
- Scary Go Round's Sea Serpents and Snail Ladders is an awesome update on Chutes and Ladders - I'm going to have to blow it up and print it out to play it.
- Matt Koelbl likes the webcomic Basic Instructions - something I've plugged before here at Comixpedia.
- Brigid catches the new webcomic lineup at Seven Seas' websites.
- Jack likes Corey Marie's Scene Language.
GOING TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS
- The Back of the Envelope Blog updates you on the plot of popular webcomics (so you don't have to read them?).
- T Campbell is annoyed at the coverage given to the webcomic based on the Heroes tv series.
- The Daily Cartoonist blog writes about Mark Pett's Guinness World Record for the largest comic strip - a very large version of a strip from his Lucky Cow comic and a group of Scottish students attempt to break the record for the LONGEST comic strip. (Insert if it's not Scottish it's crap joke here)
- Dirk Deppey links to another funny parody comic from Beaucoup Kevin - this one titled "How To Make Love The Punisher Way".

HEADLINES
- Scott McCloud's brilliant The Right Number is now free (previously it was available for purchase through Bitpass). Go read, enjoy and then email Scott to encourage him to finish it.
- I haven't seen more updates on the cease&desist style letters from Todd Goldman's attorneys that FLEEN reported on recently, but it does seem clear that the immediate effect has been to revive the Todd Goldman Copied Dave Kelly's Artwork story and spread news of it well beyond the world of (web)comics. UPDATE: Cartoon Brew has an up-to-the-minute, snark-filled update on Todd Goldman.
INTERVIEWS
- The Pulse interviews Josh Newfeld, creator of the new strip A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge. (link via Dirk Deppey)
REVIEWS
- Joey Manley offers up a review of Flipside.
- The Ferret reviews Bobby Crosby's +EV. (Comixpedia reviewed +EV last fall.)

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS
- Tym Godek shows how to be a webcomic creator in 4 easy steps. (part of Godek's awesome daily sketchblog)
- The Kea's Nest catches up with Bill Mudron's never-finished Anne Frank Conquers The Moon Nazis. (Shaenon Garrity reviewed it for Comixpedia way back in March 2003)
- Kris Straub notes one of his Starslip Crisis characters, Vanderbeam, making a cameo in Slither & Friends.
- FLEEN's Anne Thalheimer has a short post on how social networking leads to finding new comics.

- A nice interview with the creator and one of the stars of the teevee show Heroes. (Still haven't watched this though - should I?)
- 4 Color Rebellion reviews the latest episodes of the videogame Sam & Max. The comic version of Sam & Max was recently nominated for an Eisner. (4CR also has an interview with Telltale Games, the publisher of the S&M games.)
News & Views for Thursday, Somewhere in April

So um... taxes? They suck. Let's throw rocks at 'em.
HEADLINES
- CORRECTION: LA-based creators Dave Kellett and Kris Straub plan to march over to the gallery where art by alleged copycat Todd Goldman is on exhibit with a copy of Dave Kelly's original comic.
So long as someone will mail them a copy of the Keenspot FCBD book that it appeared in. Kellett's address and more details over at COPYCAT 2007 headquarters, FLEEN.UPDATE: They have received the comic book.
- Journalista! has a whole mess of links on the passing of Johnny Hart (scroll down to "comic strips").
INTERVIEWS
- The Daily Crosshatch has an interview with creator Raina Telgemeier.
- For his podcast, T Campbell interviews Eric Burns and Wednesday White (mp3 link) and they talk about Websnark, blogging & podcasting. As always, Eric is simultaneously humble and well not-humble (it's charming though), Wednesday drops geek-cred terms (did I hear CMS in there? That's content-management-system) and for some odd reason sounds like she's sitting five feet behind Eric in the interview. Surprisingly, T Campbell asks no questions about actual webcomic content though...
REVIEWS
- Sequential Tart reviews three webcomics this month: El Goonish Shive; Questionable Content; and Tittivillus.
DEAD TREES
- Webcomics-In-Print reports that a convention-only book of After Strife is out featuring strips not yet available on the web.
- MangaBlog reviews Divalicious (written by T Cambpell and art'd by Amy Mebberson).
- Newsarama has a HUGE preview of Flight 4.
Updating the Feed Lists
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on March 22, 2007 - 10:03
When we switched to Drupal one of the nice things I was able to set up was pulling in the RSS feeds of other sites to Comixpedia. That way we do less "link" blogging here but you can still get a sense of what's going on in webcomicland from the syndicated headlines.

News For Monday, January 29, 2007 (UPDATED)
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on January 29, 2007 - 11:07
Wow - it was a huge weekend for webcomics!
AWARDS
- The WCCA nominations are out (full list here). Webcomic creators can vote for their choice up until February 11th. This year, the awards are to be announced at MegaCon in Florida on February 19th.
- We also started a discussion on the weekend on which new comics from 2006 that didn't get a nomination for Outstanding Newcomer might have deserved one. Tell us what you think here.
- DAJB points out that the U.K.'s Eagle Awards are upon us again, and that they have a category for webcomics.
- The Comics Reporter notes that new at this year's Joe Shuster awards will be the Oustanding Canadian Web Comic Creator Award. The Shuster awards take place June 9th. Submission for nominations are open.
- Talk About Comics points to a report that the short film Everything Will Be OK directed by Don Hertzfeldt and based on his webcomic Anesthetics, won the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival.
- The National Cartoonist Society is accepting nominations for it awards. Nominations are due by February 23rd. Apparently, you do not need to be an NCS member to be eligible for an NCS award. However, they do not have an award for webcomics nor do they seem to consider publication online as part of their criteria for qualified nominations. I wonder when that will change...
EVENTS
- I posted the Blind Date II pairings this weekend. If you forgot to sign up and want to participate I will try to facilitate additional pairings on a rolling basis today. Go to the thread and post a comment if you want to join up.
MAGAZINE
- Grant Thomas writes about putting a webcomic into print and discusses some of the differences between the print-on-demand and the do-it-yourself approaches.
- Xaviar Xerexes presents a look at Big Panda, a webcomics host and portal from the mists of history with comments from a long list of creators, including Chris Crosby and Darren "Gav" Bleuel, John Allison, Eight, John Robey, Josh Lesnick, David Willis and more.
BUSINESS
- MSNBC is replacing Fox Trot (and possibly The Boondocks) with new comics. They're conducting a poll on it. This is MSNBC's webcomic lineup we're talking about - probably a pretty high-profile placement (I don't have any actual data on traffic though). Unfortunately it appears they are only considering work from Uclick! - probably because of an exclusivity term in a contract.
HOW-TO
- Bryant Paul Johnson posted a very useful "how to" on how he makes his webcomic Teaching Baby Paranoia.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BLOGS
- Bid to Win a Guest-Star Appearance in PC Weenies #1000.
- Love is Psychosexual wraps up on Adultwebcomics.
- Speaking of adult webcomics, check out the almost but not quite SFW (so far) There's Always Porn by Bob Sugar and Wiz Rollins.
- Webcomics In Print presents its weekly round-up of webcomics in print.
- Comics Worth Reading flags the release of the second Penny & Aggie book.
- The Comics Reporter points to a Washington Post story on Suicide Rabbit, a webcomic popular in China.
- T Campbell urges webcomics creators to vote responsibly.
- The Blank Label Comics group snagged nine WCCA nominations.
Biggie Panda: Old Skool Webcomics
One way to think of the history of webcomics is as the big bang of comics. At the beginning there were far fewer webcomic creators and they were (virtually) clustered together much more tightly (hence all the wistful talk of "webcomic community") and then, if the inflationary webcomicology theory is correct, those early webcomic exploded into the universe of comics online we have today.
