WCCA 2008 Nominees Are Out

The nominees for this year's WCCAs were released this past Sunday (sadly without any fanfare, or press release... again). But lots of interesting choices (and good links to comics!):

ComixTalk's People Of Webcomics List For 2007

And now... the fourth annual People Of Webcomics list! I'll be the first to admit that this list gets harder and harder to compile as the lines between "webcomics" and just plain "comics" blurs harder than a greasy windshield in the middle of a West Texas downpour. Plus as publishing comics on the web and other digital formats becomes more commonplace it gets harder and harder to find those "firsts" that take comics in new directions whether artistic, technical or businesss-oriented.

AWARDS 

  • In a bit of a surprise (to me at least) Papercutter #6 edited by Alec Longstreth won Outstanding Debut in the Ignatz Awards (A surprise not because Longstreth's book didn't deserve to win but because very famous cartoonist Bill Griffith had a book nominated in this category: Zippy: Walk a Mile in My Mu-Mu). Chris Onstad won the Outstanding Online Comic for Achewood.  The full list of awards are available here in simple text form, all on one page (please someone at the WCCAs use this format for releasing your list of winners next time).

  • Joey Manley has a big post on questions and comments on tailoring stats for webcomic creators in the next generation of his hosting service WebcomicsNation. I still need to read it a bit more carefully but if you're interested in stats or WCN you should probably give it a look.

When I first started Todd and Penguin, I drew about as well as a blind epileptic with hooks for hands. While I still have a long way to go to say, be as good as Phil Cho or Kazu Kibuishi, I have improved with tons of practice.

Updates On Entries in the Ill-Fated Webcomic Directory Project?

I built a "library" of webcomics and creators back in the fall of 2005 which I put into beta before realizing it was too much editorial work to deal with and the same information could be better provided through the community edited webcomic wiki - COMIXPEDIA.

Nevertheless looking back on the assortment of names collected (some from me, some sent in from you) I wonder if anyone has any significant updates on these creators 18 months later. Maybe we should interview some of them?

Flight Volume 4 Is Out

I saw via the Flight blog that Flight Volume 4 is now available: pick up a copy from your local comic store or bookstore, or order it online via Amazon.

There is also an interview at Newsarama with contributors to Flight 4, including Kazu Kibuishi, JP Ahonen, Raina Telgemeier, Graham Annable, Joey Weiser, Amy Kim Ganter, Azad Injejikian, Andrea Offermann, Sarah Mensinga and Ryan Estrada.

  • Newsarama interviews Kazu Kibuishi about Ballantine's Flight spinoff, Flight Explorer. This anthology collects the Flight stories suitable for all-ages, aiming at a younger audience. What will this mean for the regular Flight anthology? Not even Kibuishi knows.
    NRAMA: Lastly, how does this affect Flight 5, if any? What plans do you have for the next volume? Is going the companion book approach the way to do future Flight anthologies?

    KK: Hmm... I'm wondering how this will affect Flight 5 as well. I suppose we're about to find out! From its inception, the Flight project has been a series of leaps of faith, so I guess this is the next step. I'm just as curious as everyone else to know where it's all going to take us.

BUSINESS

  • Scott Ransoomair (VG catz) is creating the official Final Fantasy XI MMORPG comic Adventure Log. Seeing as how Square Enix is the copyright holder according to the published comic page, I'm guessing that he's getting paid for it. We've seen similar arrangement before by Penny Arcade and PvP, I belive.

TODD GOLDMAN

  • Dirk Deppey has a nice roundup of the recent developments in the Todd Goldman affair at Journalista. It covers the Cease-and-Desist campaign and the blogs that have removed their coverage (PWBeat, and Wired among other), the current livejournal meme and the effect of all this on Google search.

  • Technically this was the quote of April 24 I suppose and also found at Journalista. SLG Publishing's Jennifer de Guzman blogs about APE.
    While there were a few people self-publishing their comics, there were fewer of them than in the past, and there seemed to be an even marked decrease in the charming photocopied, hand-stapled mini-comic. Last year, I either bought or was generously given several mini-comics or self-published comics (you can read about that here). This year -- I bought two (one by Johnny Siu and another called "Fremont Girl") and was given none. (Boohoo!) The assumption is that the do-it-yourselfers have moved to the web.

  • The Comics Reporter, Tom Spurgeon, lists his pick for the best 50 comics of 2006. Webcomics are represented at #43 by Perry Bible Fellowship and #20 by Achewood.
  • The wedding between Kazu Kibuishi, of Copper (and various other things) fame, and Amy Kim Ganter Reman Mythology Sourcerers and Secretaries) was a glorious success according to a report by one of the McCloud daughters (sorry, not sure which one). Scott McCloud officiated at the wedding.
  • Newsarama has a preview gallery of the upcoming Flight vol. 4 anthology.
