Lea Hernandez Relaunchs Rumble Girls

Lea is on my list of people I've been trying to interview -- it's going to happen sometime this year, but for now life has kept her pretty busy (see her LJ for many details).  Her latest news is the the re-boot/re-launch of Rumble Girls on a subscription basis.  Since she's aiming for 300 fans to subscribe maybe it's best to look at this as more of a hybrid fundraising drive/subscription than the straight ahead sub models once employed by Modern Tales, etc.

What's In Your Copyright?

Newsarama interviewed some of the creators, including Park and Barbara Lien-Cooper, who entered Tokyopop's comics contest.  Heidi MacDonald comments on the ongoing Platinum and Tokyopop stories and  Lea Hernandez weighs in again on the Tokyopop contracts.

While I'll admit I do get annoyed at the more judgmental commentators on these stories, I do think that work-for-hire contracts giving the publisher the copyright to original material is horribly horribly wrong for comics.  It's great for companies interested in amassing IP for sales to Hollywood.  But that IP-centric model -- especially when such companies don't really get around to publishing comics -- somedays it seems a lot like the company that buys up a lot of patents without any intent to actually manufacture anything.

GirlAMAtic's Fifth Anniversary

From the desk of GirlAMAtic editor, Lisa R. Jonté:

Light the candles, GAM is now FIVE YEARS OLD! Hey! We're almost old enough to cross the street by ourselves!

It's been an entertaining ride these last five years. GAM has seen it's share of ups and downs and has happily been the online home of many an excellent comics creator. Sure, we've had some growing pains and toddler tantrums, but we've also had some supremely shining moments, and I wouldn't trade a minute of it for anything.

Updates On Entries in the Ill-Fated Webcomic Directory Project?

I built a "library" of webcomics and creators back in the fall of 2005 which I put into beta before realizing it was too much editorial work to deal with and the same information could be better provided through the community edited webcomic wiki - COMIXPEDIA.

Nevertheless looking back on the assortment of names collected (some from me, some sent in from you) I wonder if anyone has any significant updates on these creators 18 months later. Maybe we should interview some of them?
