Shaenon K. Garrity

New Webcomics Examiner Issue Out

The Webcomics Examiner celebrates Halloween with a focus on the recently concluded vampire comedy Bite Me and its creator Dylan Meconis. Examiner editor Joe Zabel interviews Meconis, and Shaenon Garrity reviews the popular series.

Also this issue, examiner art director Neal Von Flue focuses on innovative webcomics in the first of a series, Aggressive Experiments. The first installment focuses on a trio of maverick works: After Days of Passion; 48 Vignettes About Everything; and Electric Spirit.

Rounding out the issue are reviews of Loyola Chin and the San Peligran Order, and Reasoned Cognition.

Things of possible interest

Various items from around the net have caught my attention this last week.

Derek Kirk Kim has a lenghty post on his website about what he has been up to lately. Apparetnly he is doing some bill-paying work for DC and Vertigo, as well as a Spongebob Squarepants comic. But he also assures us he is eager to get back to doing his own work.

Robert Stevenson is one of the artists behind More Fun, which is written by Shaenon Garrity and is serialized on Graphic Smash. But he also has a sketch-blog. There isn't that much there yet, but it has some well crafted strips and thoughts on webcomics and reviews that I found interesting.

As previously mentioned, both on this blog and on the comixpedia news section, Keenspot has partnered with the Turlock journal to provide a comics page for it twice a week. A press release, including sample pages, is now available. Apparently Keen provides the comics for free, but has its own adspace that they can sell at the top of the page. It is an interesting bussiness model and I am curious what kind of comments it will generate. Scott Kurz's plan to let newspapers use his comic for free certainly generated a fair amount of buzz.

Keenspot Invades Turlock, California Newspaper

UPDATE: Keenspot put out a press release with full information.

Keenspot featured a newsbox today that apparently pictures the new comics page of the Turlock Journal, the local paper for Turlock, California. A September 29th story in the Journal explains how a partnership with Keenspot led to the return of comics to this newspaper:

On Saturday, the Journal launched its new television guide, called Prime Time TV, and announced it was partnering with Web comics publisher Keenspot.com to bring comics back to each edition of the paper.

Transitions: Comixpedia Begins Second Act

As we roll out the final week of this issue it's a good time to say thanks to the many folks who have worked hard to create this magazine and website called Comixpedia. Why now? Well besides the fact that the September 2004 issue is the 20th installment of Comixpedia, Frank "Damonk" Cormier is turning over the editorial reins of Comixpedia magazine to Xaviar Xerexes (See, I'm already writing in the third person - this EiC thing is going to go to my head!) and in many ways this marks the end of the first chapter for Comixpedia. It is also the beginning of a second act for Comixpedia, one where I fully intend to bring new voices and new features to this project to continue to make it a worthwhile resource for the webcomics community as well as a great read every month.

Webcomics Are From Uranus

Come Together

Which would you rather go see, a one-man band or an orchestra? Is a four-piece band just perfect? Was The Who so loud because they were overcompensating for only having three instruments? Is bigger really better? Or do too many cooks spoil the broth? (Should I throw in some more metaphors or get right to the, uh, meat of the matter?)

The point: Most online comics are done by just one person.

Ode to Narbonic

Alexander Danner writes a mash note to Narbonic. I'd say something snarky but I happen to agree with Danner's take on the continuing quality of Garrity's work.

Recommended Romances: A Quickie Poll

"What's your favorite webcomics romance?"

T Campbell asked this question of many webcartoonists. The answers were revealing.

Garrity's Narbonic Is 4 Years Old This Month

Such a charming and modest webcomic too. I missed the announcement of Narbonic's 4th Year Anniversary earlier this month. August 1st, if you're wondering. Vera Brosgol drew a nifty cast portrait for the date (click here to see). A warning though, I think it's behind the MT subscription curtain now.

UPDATE - Also, you might want to check out this article on the Bay Area Small Press scene where Garrity is quoted.
