Web Versus Newsprint Drama... Again!

The Daily Cartoonist is a good blog, but clearly a good chunk of its audience is fairly clueless about webcomics and the web as a distribution/publication system. A short but sweet post about R. Stevens impending launch of Diesel Sweeties in newspapers is met with the kind of whiny, defensive reaction I haven't seen since Wiley versus Scott Kurtz until Rich Stevens himself shows up and leads the counterattack:
I won’t argue the rest of your points, but there’s a million or more people doing looking at my comics every month without any kind of major media backing. When you can say that about your own stuff, you can make blanket dismissals of six and a half years worth of comics.
After that a much more interesting discussion continues. The Daily Cartoonist also promises an interview with Ted Rall on Diesel Sweeties and webcomics-to-syndication coming soon.

DEAD TREES
- E& P lists some of the initial newspapers Rich Stevens' Diesel Sweeties will launch in next year.

After a summer spent away from Comixpedia and comics too, it was great to catch up with all kinds of comics and creators at the Small Press Expo (aka SPX) this weekend. I caught some panels, bought some books and chatted with a lot of webcomic-friendly creators including Jeph Jacques and Danielle Corsetto.
SPXPo 2006
This year's SPX will be held on October 13 and 14th with the small press summit for professional and aspiring creators to be held on Oct 15 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center - just 4 miles up the road from our previous location.
SPX is also the home of the Ignatz awards for comics.
Politics & Prose Bookstore Signings: Attitude 3 And Scott McCloud

Tom Spurgeon has a good one up and now even the biz mag Red Herring is getting in on the Diesel Sweeties action!
Hopefully not only is Ted Rall talking to more folks about coming to United Media but the Diesel Sweeties deal shocks the other syndicates into looking to the web much more seriously. For kicks and speculation who out there in webbywoodland would you want to see get a chance at a similar deal?

Through a new syndication deal with United Feature Syndicate, Inc. (aka United Media), R Stevens' webcomic Diesel Sweeties will begin running in newspapers starting on January 8, 2007. Here's how Stevens made the announcement on his site...
