Are you all fans of Calamity Jon Morris' CORNERED blog? Well I am and I took a shot at submitting a few entries of my own which Jon is kindly running.  My Captain America corner went up on Tuesday and sometime today my "Spiderman Versus Saturday Night Live" corner will be up.  Jon has been doing a series of Marvel characters in this cute, icon-ized style that I really love.  Anyhow check it out! 

LEGAL BEAGLE: Bleeding Cool posts Stan Lee's deposition in the Marvel Vs. Kirby Family lawsuit.  Fascinating (Stan Lee view of) history.

DEAD TREES: Scott McCloud writes that Vera Brosgol’s graphic novel Anya’s Ghost (published by First Second) is now available for pre-order.

SPIDER CENTS: I think I tweeted this yesterday - Ward Sutton's comic in the Village Voice on the ill-fated Spiderman broadway musical is pretty funny.

Dr. McDeadpool: I saw this tweeted around yesterday and El Santo sums up the news that Christopher Hastings of Dr. McNinja will be writing for the Marvel book Deadpool.

THE UNSINKABLE MATILDA: Aaron Renier posts a comic based on Roald Dahl's Matilda for Unshelved's Book Club. It's funny with a point - a bit of an update with some Clockwork Orange thrown in.

MILESTONES:  Andrew Rothery writes that next Monday, March 14th, is the 10 year anniversary of his webcomic TRU-Life Adventures. It is a mashup of retail humor mixed with sci-fi adventure, making it a little like NBC's show Chuck (just replace spies with time travel, and the thinly disguised Best Buy with a thinly disguised Toys R Us). It's been updated daily since 2005, and in color since the summer of 2009.

HYPE: Comic Alliance spotlights Romantically Apocalyptic by Vitaly S. Alexius, describing it as "a genuinely hilarious comedy about life after the end of the world, the hopelessly imbecilic dictator who destroyed the Earth, and the one surviving minion he has left to command and irritate."  The art is almost Alex Ross-ian in its detail and texture.

NOT (ENTIRELY) WEBCOMICS: I had no idea that the creators of the iphone videogame Angry Birds, was also the creator of the now on hiatus August Jessorwebcomic. Robot6 flags a Wired story on the creators of Angry Birds that mentions the August Jessor connection in passing.  I had forgotten about August Jessor but I liked it during its run.

F@%#ing Hot Topic Rips Someone Off Again

After the hub-bub of Hot Topic selling a t-shirt ripping off artwork from Vera Brosgol this week, I am really mad to read of yet another another incident today over at The Consumerist.  Hot Topic is selling buttons ripping off Meghan Murphy's artwork from Kawaii Not.

What a week it was... or was it?!  El Santo posts up a question about "what age of comics" are we in?  I think both in terms of the evolution of digital platforms and explosion of variety of subject matter this decade represented the beginning of a new era.  What to call it though?  Digital is only half the story.

SWIPER NO SWIPING! Two incidents of bad behavior this week - one already rectified.  FLEEN has a writeup of Hot Topic's selling of ripped-off artwork from Vera Brosgol.  I saw bits of the twitter stream on this yesterday and while Hot Topic seriously needs to revamp it's IP review in its process of acquiring product, the "producer" of this shirt was some band. (The Beat has a picture comparing t-shirt to artwork)  Artists ripping off other artists? Not cool guys.  The other big to-do this week was Nick Simmon copying artwork repeatedly from the manga seriesTite Kubo Bleach.  Simmon's publisher Radical has pulled his book for now.

MONEY MONEY MONEY:  Rare comic books sell for one million dollars.  Okay, whatever?  I don't care one way or the other about rare comic book sales -- I like to read comics, not collect physical artifacts.

INTERVIEW: CBR interviews Phil Foglio about his current webcomic Girl Genius.  The Foglios are having a donation drive for their colorist Cheyenne Wright who was quite ill (but good news! is recovering).

CONTEST: Raina Telgemeier is having a contest where you can win a copy of her new graphic novel Smile.  Deadline is this Sunday!

That's it. I've officially given up on my life "settling down" anytime in the near future.

In addition to my trip to Japan last month (which I promise I'll sit down and write about someday, but you can follow Shaenon's detailed report in her current series of Comixology columns), here are some other recent doings:

Updates On Entries in the Ill-Fated Webcomic Directory Project?

I built a "library" of webcomics and creators back in the fall of 2005 which I put into beta before realizing it was too much editorial work to deal with and the same information could be better provided through the community edited webcomic wiki - COMIXPEDIA.

Nevertheless looking back on the assortment of names collected (some from me, some sent in from you) I wonder if anyone has any significant updates on these creators 18 months later. Maybe we should interview some of them?

Well, it seems another weekend has flown by without my being able to polish off my site redesign, or upload any new material here. It's really because I'm spending my creative "spare" time on a rather huge comics project that I'll post more details about a little later. So, I've necessarily been on hiatus from this site a little while--I just thought it would be a good idea to officially say so, for all the kind passers-by.

Are. You. The. Next. ScaryGoRound. Idol?

Draw a SGR comic, send it in and get judged by the Dumbrella guys.  I expect the judges to mimic the American Idol judges: John Allison = Randy, Jeff Rowland = Paula Abdul and R. Stevens = Simon.

APE: Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco, CA

APE, the Alternative Press Expo, returns to the Concourse in San Francisco for another APE-ril weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9. This fun show has continued to grow in many ways; more exhibitors, increased attendees and added programming have made this the 'must attend' event for lovers of all things alternative and self published.

APE 2006 special guests will include Keith Knight, Alex Robinson, and Raina Telgemeier (table 334).  Other artists exhibiting include: Derek Kirk Kim (table 268A), Dave Roman (table 334) and Lark Pien (table 439).
