  1. Poor Luke Ross. Going to lose over 16k grand.

On an unrelated note, I always LOVED how brazilians have to change their names before working or US comic companies so people cannot recognize them as brazilians.

  2. Identity changing has been happening forever in America… even in the comics biz! Stan Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber, and Jack Kirby was Jacob Kurtzberg originally.

  3. Luke Ross was born Luciano Queirós. While Stan Lee and Jack Kirby stayed on the frontiers of their cultures, Luke did not.

But nevermind me. I’m just bitchy.

  4. I don’t think it’s really Brazil-specific. Czechs and Lithuanians, same deal.

I met Marc Alessi around the time he was getting CrossGen off the ground. Charming man who firmly believed he was going to change the face of comics, despite having no experience in the business. From all accounts, his charm thinned the longer you worked with him, but I still wish his story had had a different ending.

  5. Well, to be fair, Chapter 11 isn’t necessarily an ending, although in most cases it may as well be. We’ll see which debts the bankrupcy court waives. It’s not looking good.

It’s too bad. Not that I thought their comics were that great, but they’d been starting to diversify a bit and they’d nearly convinced everyone that they were the real deal. You can’t convince a bank account that it holds more money, though…

  6. He’s certainly not wrong. Marvel comics was in Chapter 11 not so very long ago.

  7. Yeah, but– all due respect– that was different.

Marvel had been around for forty years (really sixty years) and had established an invaluable brand name and track record. Everyone knew Spider-Man and everyone in Hollywood knew Marvel Comics’ track record. They had LED the sales charts for a FULL TWENTY-FIVE YEARS.

Crossgen never cracked the top three. At this writing, it doesn’t have a single property recognizable outside of comics, and for all their efforts, their properties aren’t recognizable to many people IN comics. (And hey, THE CROSSOVERS was one of my favorite books of 2003.) Most of their early gains can be traced directly to aggressive-as-Hell marketing techniques, huge creator salaries and the persona of Alessi, none of which are still relevant factors.

I’m willing to bet Crossgen will be assimilated into DC, Marvel or Image within two years. And Alessi… no, I don’t see him bouncing back from this. No one TRUSTS him any more.

  8. I’d like to say I’m surprised but I never really cared for any of their comics.
