Friday News Blip and Thanks to Our Sponsors

New Sponsor! Transformers The Movie. How cool is that? We also want to thank continuing sponsors 8 Films To Die For, My Favorite Mirror, and the webcomics A Pirate's Life For Me, I See You, The Flow Field Unity, O''Deer, Gunnerkrigg Court, Alma Mater, and King Tractor Press.

NEWS

  • Digital Strips latest podcast covers the newly revamped webcomics site, Pixel Strips.
  • Jeffrey Rowland states that he will be doing some new WIGU comics which he describes as "'prequel' comics kind of. Before the madness set in." He is also going to scale Overcompensating back to 3 days a week.
  • Pat Loika launches webcomic, HoCal, about the hotel industry at the Silent Devil website.
  • Chris Crosby notes that Keenspot is a silver sponsor for this year's edition of the Child's Play charity created by Penny Arcade. It's great to see Keenspot step up and support a great cause.
  • A very brief article this time, but The Comic Book Bin website threatens to "journey back to the early history of web comics. Where did they come from? What were these proto-web comics like and who created them? We’ll track the growth of the medium and it’s relationship to the technology that spawned it." I'm curious as to what they decide to cover.

INTERVIEWS

NOT WEBCOMICS

  • The trailer for Spidey 3 drops. Lots of quick cuts so hard to tell really. But it does look like they may run the risk of Batman 2 disease on it - which if you remember is the second Tim Burton Batman movie where he crammed in to much (unresolved) story and characters for a two hour movie.

I like Deadpool.

Ah, but the alien costume story has a LOT of good to pull from.

Venom was a crap 90s

The William G's picture

Venom was a crap 90s superhero character. All he needed were some pouches.

Sandman looks pretty cool tho.

And since we're talking movies, Transformers was a great twenty minutes.

No worries X.

"I just hope the bigger-better-faster mentality of Hollywood doesn't turn Spiderman 3 into a similar mess. "

I can absolutely confirm this is not the case. The studio is not getting in Raimi's grill at all after two home runs. Did I mention I met the marketing director for Sony after the comicon presentation? Hey Tim, how about some more obnoxious name dropping?

Guys, I kinda like Spider-Man a little bit

Tim Demeter's picture

Ah, but the Burton Batman movies were all about the bad guys while the Spidey flics have always followed the hero vs. self archetype. The bad guys are just there to wow the audiences with cool effects and motivate the action. Also: I was at Comicon and have seen the awesomeness that is Venom, and I may have a friend at Sony Imageworks who may lead me to draw the conclusion of HOLY COW THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME AND I REALLY LOVE THESE MOVIES WAY PAST A SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE MARK.

You Said It Better

Tim

I'd argue the first Batman did hit the archetypal story pretty well whereas the second was a mess. I think the first two Spideys were pretty coherent and I just hope the bigger-better-faster mentality of Hollywood doesn't turn Spiderman 3 into a similar mess. I have a lot of faith in Sam Raimi's abilities though so I'm not too worried.
