Integrating text and images seamlessly

I've got some thoughts up over at Wax Intellectual about integrating text in ways besides speach balloons and text boxes. Surprisingly, I was thinking about this stuff about a month before reading Scott McCloud's section on it in his new book.

Re: Integrating text and images seamlessly

Hey these Derik A. Bedman links were very usefull to me!!!!!

I make a wordless (save for the latest guest strip) gag webcomic - unlingual, and think I've taken a wrong turn recently, and re-evaluating things and such...

On the topic of text-image integration, if I were to move to another comic project with text included, and remain OCD about such things as I am - I'd make sure never to repeat a message/meaning of things in picture and dialogue/text. I think the funny in "funny images" drives largely on economy of means and keeping things simple and new. Say, if a boulder falls from the sky, word "boulder" should never ever appear in the strip. However, if a character was to say "a pebble!" - it would have a purpose.
