Happy 5th Birthday, Modern Tales
Submitted by Joey Manley on March 02, 2007
I've heard that 99% of start-ups fail within the first five years. So this is a significant moment for us.
Also: five years is the longest I've ever held one job.

I'm glad that the site's growing and changing with age. And think, in only 5 years, you'll be having the 10TH anniversary.

I first heard about MT not long after that fateful day five years ago. It was spring and I was still in college working a part time design gig when a co-worker who knew of what I was planning in regards to putting my comic online brought me a print-off with an article about this start-up site called Modern Tales and maybe I should look into it.
I told her I wasn’t good enough for something like this.
Never could I have guessed how intertwined I’d become with Modern Tales and this Joey Manley fellow in that press release.
Congratulations Joey, more successes to you and the MT family as you chase down a decade. I take great pride in standing with you.

by Joey Manley - 03/02/2007 - 15:23
Honestly? The last couple of years have been pretty rough, mostly due to increased (and increasingly spectacular) competition, as well as our business model shift away from pay-per-view content, which came, frankly, at the expense of higher revenues in the short term, but which will hopefully serve us well in the months and years to come.
Still, any business that
by WizToast - 03/03/2007 - 05:10
Still, any business that lasts even six months is a success. You've done far better than that.
I think switching to free is smart, but I can certainly see why it could be detrimental.
What are you doing to increase revenues for the future?
My strategy for the future
by Joey Manley - 03/03/2007 - 08:14
My strategy for the future is to continue to become less of a "publisher" and more of a "service bureau" -- because most of the successful businesses on the web (outside of webcomics) all primarily exist to help people communicate with one another, either through self-publishing or through immediate one-on-one communications. Webcomics Nation was the beginning of that shift, and it will kick into higher gear when WCN 2.0 launches, and even higher gear still when/if the Silicon Valley-esque business plan I'm working on manages to attract the right investors (so far I've turned down two different sets of investors for various reasons, and four different sets of investors have turned me down, again for various reasons).
This is turning into an interview! I like it!
Congratulations!

On second thought, let's not go to Comixpedia. It is a silly place.
I run this place! Tip the piano player on the way out.
