Well, this is my first blog post on Comixtalk, and I would like to make a good first impression. Let me start by saying I've been drawing comics for about 5 years off and on with my strip, Love and Marriage. To be honest, I find it hard to get the "Type A" energy up to draw everyday, and I often find my well runs dry at the most inopportune time.
By in the words of Ray Romano, sometimes "material presents itself." My wife, family and two cats present a lot of material to me, as do everyday situations. I find that comic strips were once the sitcoms of the printed page. Today, so many that you see in the paper tend to take a political slant, with creators pushing some sort of agenda. It can get maddening. Half of the comic strips I see today belong in the editorial section of the paper. Think about it: Dilbert is often seen in the technology section, Tank McNamara in the sports section, and Mary Worth with the crosswords; but Doonesbury, The Boondocks and Non-Sequitir are, more often than not, put on the main comics page. It's as if the newspaper industry figures "if the unwashed don't want to read our opinions, we'll have someone who draws our opinions put in their little slice of paradise." Seems pretty silly me.
Then again, what do I know, I'm just a "sandlot" webcomic artist. I could use some motivation - wish they had "comic trainers" out there, who could push you into getting off your duff and drawing...I really need that right now!
