MySpace for Fictional Characters?

This is probably old news to some, but I had missed that Danielle Corsetto had set up a MySpace page for her Girls With Slingshots characters, Hazel and Jamie.

It’s not clear that everyone interacting with it knows that these are fictional characters… On the other hand it sounds like it’s been a successful promotional gimmick. Corsetto wrote:

Hazel and Jamie’s MySpace page has received massive attention! They had more “friends” in two days than I’d gotten in a few weeks! They already have their own personal “creepy stalker,” they’ve been granted “friendship vibrators” (thank you, Sam!), and Jamie’s been tickled pink over all the compliments she and her *ahem* melons have received.

  1. This is a great way to break the creative chains. I was having a block last year, so I created a fake artist who made a fake webcomic, Jack Scrap. He drew everything the opposite of how I do it – vector, cut n past, and photoshop colors. This was my favorite: http://scrapcomics.com/comic/005.php

It got me out of a funk I was having, and was a total blast.

Maybe it’s time Jack signed up for MySpace. LOL

  2. I thought this was a great idea with lots of fun potential! ^_^ Talk about promotion for a comic, Danielle has got a wonderful creative outlet at her disposal here. 🙂

  3. Mindmistress has had a livejournal for some time, same idea. Nor is she alone. Sometimes she just tells when an update is done, sometimes she muses on the different between neohuman minds like hers and regularly sapient minds. It makes a nice place for her to do quiet reflection instead of action. Hers is at mmsophia’s journal.

Of course, she’s a fictional character.

    Of course she doesn’t exist.

Of course she doesn’t visit me, give me ideas, and then wipe my memory of the encounter afterwards, so I’d think the ideas are mine.

    She’s fictional, by gum.

  4. i just broke 1000 friends this week on my myspace page. the page was originally set up for my solo electronica project ESTRECHEZ, but has lately been more about the SALAD DAYS comics/music instead. even have a few people playing some of my tunes on their own personal myspace pages (sweet!)

  5. maybe it is! those comics are DOPE!

hrm. yeah, i’ve been having a lot of fun with the SQUAREPEGZ account. like as if the characters/band themselves actually have one. it’s really inspired me and helped promote the comic. plus, i get to give ppl a preview to songs that will debut in the series as time goes on…
