New to Comixtalk - looking for feedback and advice

Hi, All.

Brief History:

About 5 months ago I started producing a webcomic called HijiNKS Ensue. I started by emailing it to my friends, then moved on to Livejournal communities and Myspace. After a while i was getting traffic from Stumble upon, and Weblog's Inc. site like TUAW.com and Joystiq.com. Now I'm receiving about 50,000 visitors and 100,000 pageviews a month. That seems like a lot of people but so far I haven't been able to/ had time to turn the site into a money generator.

I've experimented with Adsense and Project Wonderful with no real results. Indiclicks told me they didn't need any more comics and to call back in 6 months. I am considering CrispAds as my next move.

Obviously I need to get started with Merchandising (shirts, etc) but I haven't had the time.

Here's the question:

Traffic to my site is increasing every month and shows no signs of slowing down, so what steps can I be taking to turn this comic into a full time job?

I am gearing up for a deal with a major technology blog that will potentially drive hundreds of thousands of viewers to my site, and I dont want to be caught with no way to utilize this traffic to make a living.

Any and all advice is appreciated. Feel free to critique the comic as well.

Thanks!

Joel

Wow! 50,00-100,000 hits that's huge. You've proably already sorted this question out by now

Hijinks Ensue Progress?

I just remembered this webcomic as the creator did a guest comic for PvP - I wonder if that helped bump his audience up even more?  I think he's also just started a video blog about trying to make his webcomic his full-time job.

Xaviar Xerexes Oh yeah... this place is called ComixTalk now.

Can I ask how you generated so much traffic so quickly? I'm struggling at around 200-300 regular readers after 2 years over at my comic, Dorm Dorks, but 50,000 in 5 months... that sounds too good to be true. What strategies are you using specifically, if you don't mind me asking?

you've got like 8 ads on your front page including three headliners. I'd wager the ads are just negating eachother due to visual overload.

Shuriken Diaries - Updated Mondays and Thursdays

Because "Diary of a Shuriken" makes moderately less sense.

Agree with the other two posters! You sholud be making more money from Project wonderful though!

Create a sketchbook, try cafepress and create t-shirts etc. Put a donation button from paypal.com on your site friend!

Next to a printed collection, a downloadable collection wouldn't hurt. Won't cost you anything, and it may be just the thing between not getting involved and really investing time, money and privacy (as in submitting addresses) that some readers might feel comfortable with. You can offer a pdf of your print comic at Lulu's with one additional click. It won't have a cover, though.

Obviously, get merchandising ASAP. T-shirts, hoodies, etc., etc. Also consider a printed collection of your strips, which you could do cheaply through Lulu, Ka-blam or Comixpress.com. As for ad systems, don't dismiss Project Wonderful too quickly. Set a minimum bid price for ad spots (like maybe 10-50 cents to start-you can raise it later) and don't have too many spots on your pages. Maybe a banner ad on top and two half-banners at the bottom, or a top banner and side skyscraper. And with your traffic, you could also profit from Adsense-again just limit the spots you have for them to one or two. Hope this helps.
