Newcomers That Didn't Get Nominated

xerexes's picture

I still don't know whether the WCCA Best Newcomer award is for new comic or for new person(s) but either way with all of the comics coming out in 2006 I'm sure it was tough to get a nomination this time (link to nominations here). Let's post some suggestions for comics that started in 2006 that you're surprised didn't get a nomination.

I'll start with Home On The Strange which is pretty consistently funny and does a good job of tackling messy romantic geek life. I'm not saying HOTS was robbed but I wouldn't have been shocked if it had been nominated either.

What else have you(s) got?

Nominations

Thanks, Grant!

I don't think anything I nominated for any category was picked... once again in the minority (no Dicebox!).

I don't remember my newcomer nominations.

Klassic Komix Klub, Erfworld, My Adventures w/ Grandma & Grandpa

Klassic Komix Klub

They probably all got disqualified.

I love Erfworld so far but

I love Erfworld so far but it barely kicked off in terms of what got posted in 2006.

I can't even tell if the 2 strips of MAWGAG were posted in 2006 - even so how do you nominate something based on 2 strips?

If someone would tell me whether this award was for new comic or new person it'd be easier to understand. Assuming its new comic nominating Klassic Komix Klub would have been interesting. No question it should qualify - I just wonder what Johnny Ryan would have made of being nominated for a WCCA...

On second thought, let's not go to Comixpedia. It is a silly place.

2 strips of MAWGAG, Johnny Ryan, banner ads?

I'm not sure what concept of "strip" you're using to say that "My Adventures with Grandma and Grandpa" is only two strips (I'd call it about a couple dozen pages), and I'm also not sure why you're refering to it as MAWGAG. That sounds like some kind of hillbilly incest puke fetish webcomic.

I'm sure Johnny would give these awards all the respect that they deserve ...

And hey, I just went to the awards web site and they are running big banner ads for some of the nominated comics right there on the nominations page. I see no link for how to buy ads, and all the ads seem to KeenSp* related. Now that seems a little weird, doesn't it? It seems like using big banner ads to promote select comics would skew votes toward those comics.

Oh yeah - got thrown off by the MT archiving system (just two entries in the dropdown) - I see there's actually a lot there.

Are you trying to imply that a hillbilly incest puke fetish webcomic would be a bad thing?

Hillbilly Incest Puke Fetish Comic
Are you trying to imply that a hillbilly incest puke fetish webcomic would be a bad thing?
No way, I love that genre! But such comics ought to be disqualified if nominated in any category other than Outstanding Hillbilly Incest Puke Fetish Comic. I'm just trying to make sure we properly pigeonhole each comic squarely in whatever box it belongs.

And, yeah, the Modern Tales/Webcomics Nation archiving system is so flexible it can cofuse sometimes. Comic-strip type artists tend to make chapters with single comics in them while comic-book type artists tend to make chapters with multiple pages.

If the barely-kicked-off, 2 strips are new, and you think they're outstanding, then you ought to be able to nominate them. But you're probably right, and those comics probably got disqualified for being too new or something.

To me, holding "barely kicked off" against a comic in an "outstanding newcomer" category seems pretty silly as newcomers by their very nature have barely kicked-off, but that's no more silly than the rest of the WCCAs, I guess.

Also, I'm not sure that "barely" is an important distinction for something that's clearly been "kicked off." I guess I'm just not a relativist on such things. It's either been kicked off or it hasn't. That's like Chuck Norris trying to tell me to stop my crying because he just *barely* kicked my nuts off.

Now that you mention it...heeey yeah. O.o

I think there are other comics that I wish would get nominated but I'm not surprised that it didn't either. (The Chelation Kid being one of them.) I know they don't exactly have the readership to probably get them a nomination.

One of my picks for

One of my picks for Outstanding Newcomer was Gravity. I don't think it's very well known at all so I'm not surprised it didn't make the final nominations, but I thought it had a strong start and got even more interesting in succeeding chapters.

I nominated Magnolia Pearl

I nominated Magnolia Pearl for Twist:Ending (rude, crude and frequently very funnY) and Jessica McLeod who seems quiet adept at churning out freakishly cute comics!

And BTW I was a bit chuffed and humbled to get a third nom in the Superhero Category... third time lucky maybe?
