Would you like a Blog with your Web Comic, sir and/or madame?

Blog-like content, in tandem with a web comic. Also known as "the news post" in a lot of comics. I've recently come across a couple of strips that don't have any kind of news/blog posts at all, instead just posting the comic and being done with it.

As with everything, I don't like that.

Shuriken Diaries uses the Comicpress WP theme. This allows us to post textual content in tandem (and separately from) with the web comic updates. I like this. It allows me to post alt-text without actually jumping on the alt-text/title-text bandwagon that several biggies seem to have made popular.

I do love the Dr McNinja alt-text. Ninjas can do no wrong.

Most importantly, it allows us to post content that falls outside of the standard comic update. I've used it to post fanart, comic recommendations, and other things that don't relate directly but relate in a lesser way nonetheless to Shuriken Diaries.

Perhaps I'm an asshole, but I came across an AWESOME comic. It's hilarious. Lovely art. The works. But, it has no news area, and even worse no links area. It stands alone. I want to link this comic, even though I know that my links sidebar is incredibly under used due to a lack of visitors, but I can't do it knowing that this comic and its creator(s) have no way of sending anyone any love.

I'm not saying Shuriken Diaries won't link someone unless it gets a link back. Far from it. I don't think anyone has linked us. But they could if they wanted to, and Shuriken Diaries/any comic they link would/should be greatful, regardless of the end result.

The main reason I'm in a stitch about this? The comic in question was linked from a major-mondo webcomic, in that comic's news/blog section. In a few days it'll get approximately 5000+ hits, likely way more because his site came highly recommended from the big comic. It'd be nice if the potential long tail traffic spread could continue, but because of the lack of a news/blog/link section, the love won't be paid forward anymore.

If you've gotten this far, then you can answer this question: What do you prefer?

I'm the writer/site manager/site pimper for Shuriken Diaries. You love Ninjas, and therefore we love you.

I like the news post/blog thing for a different reason. When you can read something like that in addition to the comic, it makes the creator a lot less of a mysterious figure - it makes the person human. It puts the creator at your level. The great thing about webcomics as opposed to print media is the interaction aspect, and if that isn't utilized, then what's the point of putting something on the web?

At Onezumi.com we've been doing the News post/Comic post thing for years now, and most people tell us it definitely helps to connect with us. Part of the whole thing I've been working on with www.awsom.org is to actually make it easier to set up this type of system using Wordpress (and my Pixgallery image archive plugin actually adds some news/comic interlink features to Comicpress).
