ComicSpace.com, MySpace for Comics?
Submitted by Erik Melander on December 5, 2006 - 17:27
In an email sent out today to all users of OnlineComics.net, they announced the start of a new venture named ComicSpace.
I'm mailing all comic creators in the OnlineComics.net database to let them know about a new site I've started called ComicSpace.com. As the name implied, it's a lot like MySpace, but with the added benefit of being focused entirely on comics. Within a week or two, comic creators will even be able to host their comics on ComicSpace. Even if you're happy with your current hosting situation, you can use ComicSpace as a promotional and networking tool.
While OnlineComics.net is dedicated to providing notifications of updates (as well as some community functions), the features of ComicSpace (besides hosting) are not outlined on the webpage or in the email sent out.

At least it's not vomitous in appearance like MySpace it.

Yeah this reminds me of Collectica - http://www.collectica.com its a site focused for comic book and movie memorabilia collectors - definitely worth a check they grew a lot and are getting some impressive people to put up their collections/auction them

I haven't gotten too many total strangers wanting to be my friend. I've been choosy about who I ask. Which oddly enough includes most everyone in this thread.
As it is I'm going to use the friends list as an online set of bookmarks. If people keep it updated I'll use for more than that. Hopefully Josh will add more stuff.

by Black_Kitty - 12/06/2006 - 15:25
I only signed up yesterday and I already have 41 friends. I think I only know half of these people? It's not a bad thing but it's just interesting. The only friends request I made was of NightGig but after I made that request, I started getting people asking to be my friend. So I've decided to wait it out and see how many people can I get on my friend's list without asking anyone.
I'm suspecting that for some people, they're just trying to build up an audience. This is almost like a science experiment! What do you get when you put a bunch of webcartoonists into a myspace-like network? :)

Went and joined today, and wow - there's a huge turnout already. This thing might really be something big. I like.

by hpkomic - 12/06/2006 - 14:06
Not exactly sure what the result is going to be of all this, I have a bunch of friends already apparently. (Maybe it's just the myspace whoring in a new wrapper?)
If it'll let me get into contact with new artists, I'm all for it. Now I am just waiting for the new functions to come in.

Geez, didn't kindergarten teach you anything?
I might just give this a try. Looks interesting enough, and it could be fun.

I've never used myspace before and at first wasn't going to sign up...then curiousity got the best of me...
It seems like an interesting idea. I wonder how the comic hosting will go.

IN THEORY communism worked
by Tim Demeter - 12/06/2006 - 02:28
To me, the advantage of MySpace is it's tremendously huge community, not it's marginal tools. While the ideas here are noble, ComicSpace may attract no more than webcomics existing audience, and therefore, merely preach to the choir.
But I think it's a worthwhile idea, and will sign up for surz.
Also: is that the first mention of you joining a certain new webcomics collective Eric? Good on ya.

Well, Tim.
by The William G - 12/06/2006 - 10:17
Well, Tim.
As you know, I'm old and forgetful, and well on my way to becoming Welton Colbert's sidekick, but I think the networking thing seems to be working because I got a huge pile of "friends" now that I haven't gotten the foggiest clue who they are.
BUT~ I really don't know what the hell else to do with the page aside from leaving it as some sort of online resume/ potfolio.

The layout is eerily myspacey, to the point of reverse-engineering. But they failed to reverse engineer myspace's unique brand of eye-vomit inducing ugliness.
