2007 Weblog Award Nominees Announced

I don't know much about the Weblog awards for blogs, but this [edit:] is the second year they've included a "comic strip" category. The nominees are:

And here's a link to the full list of award nominees if you're interested.

UPDATE: I've gone ahead and fixed the list of nominees here to add the creators' names and webcomic URLs. I have no idea about "Attack" though - please post a comment here if you know which comic the nomination is for. As noted in the comments below it appears that the "final nominees" are selected subjectively by someone(s) at the Weblog Awards (from a list of nominations by the public). Last year's winner - Least I Could Do plus Day by Day and Sluggy Freelance are all repeat nominees (they were on the 2006 list of final nominees).  [I guess it's also somewhat interesting that both years two conservatively-slanted opinion comics have been included in the nomination list, but no progressively-slanted comics have been picked for inclusion.]

Here's hoping that the juggernauts PA, PvP, etc don't win. They don't need the publicity that they may get from it. Ideally, this would be a "best new" category, otherwise it could turn into the Emmies with South Park and Simpsons winning year after year.

Because "Diary of a Shuriken" makes moderately less sense.

It looks like it's a popularity contest a la American Idol: You may vote once every 24 hours in each poll. It's also interesting that the nominees are picked by... well someone(s) - I couldn't find any definite statement of who owns/runs the Weblog awards (other than the name Kevin Aylward on many of the blog posts) and who gets to pick the actual "final nominees" from nominations submitted by the public. It is clear though that the way the list of final nominees picked is pretty subjective.

The winner last year was Least I Could Do which got 5394 votes. Voting this year is 8 days - so hardcore fans of any nominated comic can vote 8 times for it. If PVP gets even 1000 of its fans to pay attention to this contest it could log 8000 votes right there.

This is the second year that they've had a comic strip category, and it wouldn't have been that hard to include all the creator's names.

Mr. Anonymous again! Gosh you are cheeky these days :)

If you'll click through the link you'll see that the Weblog Awards site itself did a fairly crappy job of posting the comic nominees - they only bothered to put in three of the creator's names, used inconsistent formatting, didn't include links to any of the sites, etc.

What I posted was actually a big improvement over the site's press release. If we decide this award is something legit to cover, we'll take a longer look at it. For now it looks so heavily blog-focused that I'm not sure how much interest it will be to the readers here.
