2008 Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards Announced!

Winners of the 2008 Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards announced!

The 2008 Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards winners were revealed in a live ceremony on Saturday the 8th at the Megacon convention in Orlando, Florida.  Winners were also simulcast in webcomic format though a online presentation available at www.ccawards.com.

This year's big winner -- the Outstanding Comic of 2008 -- was Girl Genius, by Phil and Kaja Foglio.  Girl Genius is a steampunk tale: "a gaslamp fantasy with adventure, romance and mad science", set in an alternate history "where the Industrial Revolution has become an all-out war" due to the appearance of "Sparks" -- highly charismatic mad scientists with supernormal abilities in one or more sciences.

Girl Genius began appearing online on April 18, 2005, and has garnered critical praise ever since, including winning the 2006 WCCA award for Outstanding Story Concept and the 2007 WCCA award for Outstanding Science Fiction Comic. Girl Genius also took away top prizes this year for Outstanding Writer, and Outstanding Environment Design.

Other big winners this year include Meredith Gran's Octopus Pie (Outstanding Newcomer), and Tracy J. Butler of Lackadaisy (Outstanding Artist).
