New Wowio Deal?

DJ Coffman has posted some comments on the new Platinum-owned WOWIO deal and he explains why he's passing on it.  From DJ's explanation it does seem like WOWIO is becoming a bit more like a webcomics portal and it also seems to shift the risk of getting advertising onto the publisher (that's you the humble webcomic creator under WOWIO's contract speak).

Take a look, Wowio is now open.

Yep - you know it looks the same so far.  The online reading interface is actually pretty decent from my first minutes of using it.

Re: New Wowio Deal?

"For revenues derived from Preview, Publisher shall receive 20% percent of the quarterly gross advertisement revenue generated by interactive display advertising on pages that contain page images from Publisher’s Content." As I understand it, that would be the ad-money from pages read directly on the website rather than as downloaded e-books. Out of curiosity I'm wondering how that 20% compares to the payment rates from other paying webcontent sites.

Good question considering many sites don't pay for content at all these days.

I was just struck though by the change in direction to displaying comics also on the browser as opposed to the download only model. Now WOWIO is also going to be a DrunkDuck/Keenspot/ModernTales type of site too in a real sense.

So maybe another good question is how does WOWIO's terms compare to those other sites?  What is the comics creator getting out of having their comic appear on WOWIO in addition to wherever else they presumably are already displaying it on the web?
