Metapost: Webcomic Overlook, lucha version

As you may have noticed, things are looking a little different around here. Thing is, this page was due for a refresh. I was never 100% with using the old banner, as it could be interpreted as an endorsement of the webcomics shown. It was meant to be temporary, but it somehow lasted over a year.

Well, I managed to put together some drawings to come up with a new, more luchadore-themed blog. Here it is in poster form.

The rest of this post isn’t going to be webcomic related. But, if you want a somewhat in-depth breakdown on where the pictures came from, keep going.

The image of El Santo, me, isn’t from a picture of me at all. I actually photo-referenced an image of Blue Demon (whose mask I wear). Above all, the guy was a damn snazzy dresser. I was tempted to use a picture where he was wearing a snazzy suit, but the pose was too awesome not to use.

I photo-referenced edecanes Roxana for the ring girl. She wasn’t originally supposed to be in the header prominently, but I figured I spent a butt-load of time drawing and coloring… I might as well add her somewhere prominently.

Finally, the Webcomic Man had the body of the late, great Eddie Guerrero and the face of … um … an iPod Touch. If you look closely, there’s an actual webcomic displayed on the screen. (Of my own invention. Take that, people who keep challenging me to make my own webcomic!) Apparently, it’s a pretty good comic, since Webcomic Man is sporting five stars on his left moob.

Then I got really cheap and destroyed all my hard coloring world by rendering everything in half-tone. That and the yellowish background is a callback to the great lucha libre posters aesthetic:

…. while the shameless cheescake is itself a lucha libre tradition:

Though, if you really want to get down to the brass tacks, this was probably my biggest influence. C’mon, ya little placemat!

I’m not done updating. I’m hoping to update the “boxing girl” logo in the One-Punch Reviews header. She stays, of course, but she’s probably feeling a bit left out of the whole color revolution.
