State of the Commune

Those of you who have been following me for a few years, may have recognized today, September 17th, as the day I traditionally made as many guest strips as humanly possible and posted them on webcomics sites far and wide so that pretty much anywhere you went on the web, my comics would be there. Since I originally did this without saying a word about it myself, it became known as "Ryan Estrada Day", or "Estradarama" to those trying to figure out what happened.
Well, I'm very pleased to say there is no Ryan Estrada Day today. There was a lot of criticism of last years' offerings, and all of it absolutely correct! It was fun as a stunt, but taking 2 months off work to prepare for one day, then being so swamped catching up with my paid work that I can't draw any other personal stuff for the rest of the year.
Between the guest days, and my work at the Cartoon Commune, I slowly but surely got more into the business of making products, rather than telling stories. In meeting deadlines rather than meeting quality standards. And the reason you haven't seen a lot of new work from me of late, is because that is no longer the case.
From now on, I am in the business of making quality work, and trying to make a living off of that work, rather than trying to squeeze it in between commissions. I have a list of projects that I'll be doing over the next year, and when they're ready, you'll get the chance to see them!
Here's what's in the works:
(a new daily webcomic)
A few years back, I posted a comic called "Real Heroes" about a supervillain who is terrible at his job. What you may not have know is that after this, I drew three more issues of this comic, but for complicated reasons, was unable to release them. Those 96 pages have been sitting on my hard drive for years, unseen, and they're some of my favorite comics I've ever made! So starting October 1st, Villain is coming back as a daily webcomic, with those issues acting as a 96 page buffer! So with no hope of missing updates, I'm proud to begin my first daily webcomic.
(The completed graphic novel)
Another comic I've been working on for years, and that I'm always talking about finishing, but other things get in the way! But that time is now! The first half is already online, but the rest of the book will be bundled up as a graphic novel, and submitted to publishers, hopefully to appear in bookstores, as I always planned!
-The Kind You Don't Bring Home to Mother
(The animated feature)
That's right, the comic that lost Zuda by one vote is gonna be a movie. No, I haven't been approached by a Hollywood studio or signed a multi-million dollar deal. But what I did do was spend the summer working on independent films, and learn to get it done. It's gonna be a rough road, but I intend to get it done.
I have lots more projects down the pipeline, but these are the three I'm juggling now. I've been running this site for 6 years now, and trying to make a living at comics for 23. I'm really happy with what I've done so far, but now it's time to kick some butt.
