I've tried to get something like this going a few times before, but it seems that many creators fear IRC. I do like the idea of a place where creators can gather and talk freely in a form more dynamic than simple forums. Often, these channels can devolve into rather silly places, but with strong moderation, that can be kept to a minimum.
So has there been any thought put towards creating a Comixpedia channel on an IRC network?
I vote making one on SorceryNet. Why? because that's where all the other channels I'm on are located... and I'm lazy :)
There's always the Keenspace channel (even though the service is called Comic Genesis now, because no one cared to change the name).
It's a channel always full of people, although not every conversation there is about comics.
And NOT in Nightstar, PLEASE! They have something against brazilians, they blanket kill all brazilian IPS.
www.alexandilia.com.br is my site.

and with good reason.
Similar to what Rpin said, it'd probably end up being a place where creators go to not talk about comics at all, so I wouldn't worry too much about making different chats for different kinds of webcomic-related topics.

What reason would that be? I never bothered to look for an official answer, but a friend of mine said it had something to do with Brazil being the most common origin of hacker attacks.

I was just making a bad joke. I have no idea why they ban brazilians.

I'll second that... that's where my channel is!
I can use IRC but I don't know enough to set up a channel or anything. I'm still willing to designate something the Comixpedia IRC channel if someone goes to the trouble of setting one up. But I don't think I can do it myself.
So if anyone does set something up let me know so I can put up some links to it.

I think it's more like a problem I have with getting when you're joking or not.
Ironically speaking, of course. :)

Alright, I went through and registered a chan on SorceryNet a few minutes ago.
Server: sorcery.net
Channel: #comixpedia
(I can go ahead and give Op powers to anyone the admins say, once people start coming in... for now, it's just me idling in there)
Is it odd to anyone else that we've just setup a channel for discussing webcomics on a sorcery IRC network?
I have no problem with it, personally. I just find it a bit strange.

4!
Oh man...I have to join another IRC network too?
I like being on Freenode.net! But the Comixpedia channel couldn't actually belong there...

Yeah... I pretty much leave my computer on and connected to IRC all day, so I'll mostly be idling in there all the time.
If you have Mozilla Firefox, you can get an extension for IRC named ChatZilla.
You can find the download page here....
It only two hundred killobyes......https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=16&application=firefox
Finally my open source fanboyism side scream (You can ignore this suggestion if you want to):
Don't use MIRC and Trillian, they are evil and nonfree and they cost money for so called "Professional" version.
Actually, you can purchase those products in the from of sharewares.
For Trillian....https://www.ceruleanstudios.com/buy/buy.php
For Mirc if you read the fine print....http://www.mirc.com/get.html
But that beside the point to why they are evil.
The only things I will pay for software is tech support. Softwares take excatly zero dollar to produce/replicate so it does not make sense to me buy softwares.
Still, If I can't get the full features version of a particular program than that mark them "AVOID AT ALL COST".
Basically, my policy is that any software that cost money to buy sucks no matter how stable, innovating that is. I can alway find alternative that is at least good as them or somewhat at some level good as them, or even better than them.
For example If I wanted something like Trillian I get GAIM. If I want something like Window, I get Linux. (Still havn't made the switch to linux yet). If I want something like Internet Explorer (They can only be used on winblow so they are not freeware), I get Firefox or Opera.
The reason why Nightstar bans brazillians is simple.
They're just too god damned sexy what with those lean, tight, tanned bodies toned by their constant shuffle to a samba beat. If they started allowing Brazillians into the chatroom it would collapse into a quantum singularity of sexy.
Plus, if the internet is telling me the truth, Brazil is chock full o' transgenders who are extremely hot and there are simply too many people who can't deal with that kind of confusion. No siree, not on my watch.
Stop being so sexy Brazil and maybe we'll let you play.

What IRC network the comixpedia channel will be hosted on?
While we at it, let talk about comixpedia.org IRC! It will be great because it will be easier for editors to coordinate effort.
I am more contents to create the comixpedia.org channel on freenode where open source projects and open contents project channel are hosted. Note: the regular comixpedia channel shouldn't be made there. Only free contents/open source/ project like the webcomic encyclopedia can fit there.

At one point - about 2003 to early 2004 we used a comixpedia channel on nightstar.net (I think that's right) - don't know if its still active or not. I don't have time to support an IRC channel but I would be happy to link to and publicize someone starting an unofficial one either back at nightstar or somewhere else. Gwalla helped us set up the first one I think.
Also I'd rather have one big Comixpedia IRC channel (at least at first anyways) personally - if it got really popular I'd think about splitting it up into smaller topics (like encyclopedia/.org, portal, etc).
