I've never actually posted an article, because I have NO idea what would be newsworthy. So... I am just going to ask. WHAT IS NEWSWORTHY? Because I have NO clue.
First off, it depends whether you want to go for a news post/article, ot a full-blown feature piece.
If it's a matter of features, the editors brainstorm potential story directions based off of loose monthly themes.
If it's a matter of news articles, then there are two other divisions to consider: news reporting, and press releases.
Press releases are the articles most commonly submitted by "outsiders" (i.e., non-'Pedia staff). They usually consist of a public advert about something that is happening either related to their own webcomic, or to a friend's, or etc.
News reporting is just a matter of snooping around the webcomics and comics world, and keeping an eye/ear open for any hubbub, discovery, event, conflict, etc.
Since so MANY things can be related to webcomics/comics and the webcomic community, the potential for news is actually quite high. Were we to have an actual dedicated paid staff, you can be sure that there would be full-time reporters browsing every potential news source and lead around. One day, tho! ^_^
If you come across anything that you think the rest of the webcomic community may be interested in hearing about, then you should defintely submit a news blurb about it! That's how we get to hear about, say, Derek Kirk Kim getting noticed by major booksellers' awards events, or a conflict involving copyright issues and webcomics, or etc.etc.etc...
I was just wondering how I can submit an annoucement about our new Webcomic? I already posted a blog here but I wasn't sure what else I could do to let people know about it. We also have a contest that starts tomorrow so I wanted to post about it but was wondering what the best way would be. I didn't see a way to post a news item or press release anywhere...
Posting a blog post or participating in the forums is the way to go. The editors decide what to put on the front page - if they think your post is interesting enough they'll post it to the front page. But even the blog posts not on the front page get readers...
Heehee! Good question!

We also have a contest that starts tomorrow so I wanted to post about it but was wondering what the best way would be. I didn't see a way to post a news item or press release anywhere...

Another post with a reply from a former editor on newsworthiness.
