Let anonymous users post comments

I notice that since this option has been taken away, there have been virtually zero comments. There's generally over 10x as many anonymous users as members on the site at any time, so it's not too surprising. Reading the comments is just as interesting as reading the article, so it's really hurting the site, imo.

There I have to disagree. It's a little nicer to find someone who's willing to tell you their identity if they're going to kick you in the teeth over an article you wrote rather than having hundreds of anonymous trolls trampling all over the place.

Wow, that was a bit incoherent; let's try that again. If a person has to take a moment to register, that lag time may give them a few moments to simmer down and formulate a more reasonable response than just "OMG YOU SUXX0RS STOP WRITING YOU MOTHER....". It also discourages the hit-and-run insults if people are just feeling snarky. On the positive comment side, knowing some sort of identity means that the author has the opportunity to open up a positive dialogue with the poster rather than having to wonder who said something nice.

However, it's not my site, so I'll just go along with what the moderators decide.

Yes, and that's all wonderful in theory, but the fact of the matter is there's currently only one comment on the front page. 90% of anonymous posters are not flamers and, hey, at least flames are entertaining. A complete lack of comments isn't.

Flames are entertaining to read, but not so great if you're the original poster. :\

Anyway, our wrangling here is a bit moot since you can post anonymous comments. I just tried out on the front page and it went through fine.
