You do know from a Japanese stand point, you typed "animation animation" right?

Sorry, but unless you elaborate what this about or something else to somehow make this appear more legit the majority of us are going to assume this is some kind of scheme.

I dunno...as a freelancer for 15+ years, I've never viewed a posting on a message board as a "scheme." In fact, I've gotten work from responses before.

To say "scheme" would imply that the potential client would stand to profit from the response. If he's asking for a link, I'm not sure how that can hurt you, Brian.

Of course, I've never corrected the potential client's grammar, either.

Thanks for the link, Mark. Even though my work isn't necerssarily appropriate for this gig, I'll be sending you some links in case something else comes up down the line.

*On second thought, my original response came off as too harsh, so, EDIT.*

My main issue here is the information on this seems a little sparse. It doesn't really tell us what the company does, or what the work they're offering would entail.

Well in my experiences with Clients/jobs like this. They're not going to give you details on the project unless they can use you. Saves the project from being compromised if too much information gets out and a competitor starts a similar project. It's pretty much a 'need to know' basis.

Re: Cartoonists Needed Paying Freelance

Yeah, I was pretty tired when I posted "anime animation".

Steve and Rich are correct about disclosing to much information. Wish I could tell you more. I'm currently just trying to find people with the right art style. Those who are chosen will definitely find out more about the project.

What I can say is that Bernal Media will be publishing original projects in a variety of media. I would like to start the art for this particular project early January 2005.

I'm currently emailing a variety of artists whose style seems appropriate for this project. Artists who would like to be considered should send sample links to

I agree with Steve. I've gotten several solid freelance gigs from message posts just like this one. :)

At least he didnt say, "Japanimation" -- *shivers*

There is that. We can thank Cartoon Network in its early years for perpetuating that moronic term when it showed the occasional anime feature length. They've more than made up for it in recent years, though.

I dunno, my interest is fairly peaked, but I have a feeling my work wouldn't be mainstream enough for what you're looking for, anyway.

Over in the RPG design world, pretty much all work comes from posts like this one. RPG companies who come up with cool ideas they hope to continue to pay the rent with won't risk telling the world the basics of those ideas, lest someone with a dedicated staff and a whip crack a version of the idea out first.

Speaking of which, has anyone found that they get a lot of e-mails with graphics arts / publishing business offers that arn't? Thankfully once I installed the anti-spam subject header password filter (e-mail sent to me has to contain the word "TENTACLE" in the subject header or it's immediately deleted, unread) this sort of stuff has diminished significantly as most of the people sending such schemes through e-mail don't bother to read my site in detail to understand the anti-spam password.

A lot of the time it's the "we can't afford to pay you for your artwork but we'll give you a free copy of the game/poster/etc.)" scheme.

The worst one I ever got was right when my comic was first becoming popular and this guy wrote me saying he was starting a publishing business and wanted to publish my webcomic as a book. Of course since he was a small company he said he wouldn't be able to afford to pay me to publish my comics in a book but he would be able to give me a discount on two copies of the book. What the fuck!?!!? A discount!? Sheeeesh! Talk about a supreme scam, not only does he get to publish my comic and make a profit off that but then I don't even get the "free copy" that most of these scammers offer. Discount my ass.

Unless they give me an idea of how much money is coming my way in the e-mail for my work I assume it's just another joker looking to exploit a naive artist and the missive gets deleted.

Discount.... sheeesh! And on only two copies too.

My god, the balls on some people.

A link to a company website is always a plus I would think when trying to recruit talent. You can judge how professional the organization is based on how their website looks. Not to mention being able to see what other productions the company has worked on is a plus in determining their legitimacy.

I've had so many people attempt to scam me through e-mail that I'm very wary myself of anyone I haven't actually networked with in person.

Discount... Grrrrrrrrr...! The gall of that one still burns my ass. I mean really, just what kind of mope did he take me for?
