How do you store your comics?

Toon_Dawg's picture

I'm trying to figure out a storage system for all of my inked comics. Right now I've got them in folders in a drawer, which is horribly unorganized. I'd like to put them in a book, but I have no idea what to use.

I tried a paper page based scrapbook a few years back, but I didn't like having to tape the comics in the pages. It created a lot of work when I had to take them out in order to rescan them for a book compilation.

Any suggestions? How do you store your drawings/comics?

RE: How do you store your comics?

I store them all digitally. I tried storing them in binders but after a few years the papertrail was just ridiculous. Now I've got them all backed up on DVD on a shelf and can pull them anytime I need them.

RE: How do you store your comics?

Since I draw on 8 1/2 x 11 paper, I store my finished pages in the magazine slip covers (with boards) that you can buy at any comic book shop worth it's salt, and I keep them sealed with tape. That keeps may pages from smearing (since I do pencil shading) and also keeps my earlier acidic paper pages from turning too horribly yellow.

I should do a digital solution as well though and keep it off-site. That's one of my biggest nightmares that some fire is gonna break out in my old building and completely ruin my life.

Artfolio or Itoya artportfolio portfolio books. They come in a variety of sizes, and can hold 24-72 pages depending on the size/how you choose to store the comics. About $10 per book, I believe. I have to get a new one every 3 months or so and have 7 or 8 now, I believe.

Anyways, I just stack them up in sequential order by my desk. I pull them out often for reference while working on pages. When I'm done with everything, they'll find their way into a box in a closet.

My originals are just stacked in my closet. Digital files are stored on my hard drive and backed up three times: once to my backup computer's hard drive and to two separate DAT backup sets, which are stored in a safe deposit box.

I have a mini filing cabinet I got at Office Max a few years ago for the original pencils and inks when I use ink. It's only plastic but it's strong, hella portable, and has a lock. It's designed to be stackable and I figure I can fill a couple of these things in a few years. Digital files are stored on my external hard drive. (That thing's been a lifesaver both the time my old laptop died and when my hard drive crashed on my new machine.) I'll probably start backing them up on DVD, too, once I start work on Book Two, and when I can figure out how to remind my machine that it can burn DVDs...

I do my comics on 11 x 17 bristol board, so has been kind of a hassle storing them. Recently, however, I came across some plastic bins that work perfectly. As far as digital files, I have mine on my hard drive and on a separate portable hard drive.

Take care,

Jamie

Before I knew what I was doing I was drawing and inking mine in A4 Art Diaries from the supermarket. Now I've got five filled on a shelf and a sixth in progress. I've got the finished panels all digitally saved on currently ten CDs at the moment, with nearly enough for another sitting on the harddrive at the moment.

I draw on B4 manga paper, and it just so happens all the stationary stores here in Japan sell B4-sized plastic briefcases for $10 a piece.

I'm planning on moving everything to a flat file once I return stateside.

Yeah, Japan's a comic artists' wet dream come true. I always stock up when I visit there.

Me, I just stuff them in the dresser

I use the Itoya Artportfolios as well. I draw on 11x17 inch boards, and they just happen to make 11x17" artfolio things. I really like 'em - they are excellent quality with a strong plastic vinyl exterior thingy. :D
