I'll be honest here. Between the ads and the side navigation, the new format doesnt really suit the idea of having a "cover image". If it's there, the news you want people to read is below the fold, and if it's not there its little more than some fan art on another page.
I disagree - once I knock down the CSS problems I've had and the 600 x 400 cover is right in the middle at the top I think it'll be as prominent as it's always been. And it will continue to feature top-notch webcomic artists contributing to the montly issue theme like always.
We generally pick artists driven by what the issue is supposed to be about so it has a lot to do with matching the content of an issue with an artist based on style, or what the artist is known for.
