Revenge of the Rising Stars of Manga



It seems it's that time of year again -- the top twenty Tokyopop Rising Stars of Manga Contest finalists have been announced and are available for viewing. Website visitors get to vote on the "People's Choice Award" winner, which will published in the final anthology along with the seven winners picked by the judges.

I don't recognize any webcomic artists among this batch.

I have to wonder if this People's Choice thing is a such a good idea in reality. Do people really take the trouble of clicking on all of those entries and reading them all the way through, or will they just read the ones on top, or just glance at the first two pages of eachand pick the one with pretty art? Last year the People's Choice winner was, in my opinion, the most poorly-plotted and cliched out of all of the entries.

It sounds a good way of finding the comic most likely to be popular. Comics with the most immediately interesting front pages and most attractive art will tend to be picked off the shelves first.
