Quitting The Day Job Updates

xerexes's picture

Jon Rosenberg quits last remnants of a non-webcomics job to do Goats fulltime.

Ryan North finally reveals that he quit his day job an entire year ago...

I'm actually curious as to how many people make their living solely for a webcomic-based enterprise at this point.  It's getting to be more than I can count on my fingers.

I think he still does

I think he still does webdesign projects on the side, so I'm not quite sure. It's not technically his "day job", it's really just moonlighting.

Which was a great show.

I draw my comic and publish my comics full time.

In fact, we just paid off our house and land here. WOO.

I did it for 18 months but went back to the cubicles to get capital for new projects. The thing is, I can eke out a living just barely on the comic, but I can make mad coin plus benefits as an analyst.

When the projects (book, card game, CD, mailers to newspapers) pay off I might go back to full time, or I might just keep saving until I can move out of the country.

Come on!

I hear a lot about the people who are able to make a living off their webcomics... Isn't there some kind of recognition for those of us who don't make a solitary dime?

Pure artists unite!

How about not much more than a few dimes?  I just did the taxes for last year and I think Comixpedia still officially qualifies as a charity...

Feh!

There is a difference between being merely unprofitable and being completely, utterly destitute, X. Your failure is flawed, imperfect. Mine is like a diamond.

I'm speaking with tongue in cheek of course. Monkey Law isn't a for-profit venture, there isn't even a way on the site for people to give me any money for anything. It's not intended to support me, or even pay for itself. That's what I have a day job for.

I do respect the people who are able to make a go of it, even though it's not for me.

Like Rob Baldur, I would be able to say that I support myself (specifically on WCN revenues) if I could resist the sweet, sweet consulting money. I can't resist the sweet, sweet consulting money right now ...

I make enough off my webcomic to pay for my webcomic. I'm not going into the red on it which makes my wife very happy because some other hobbies I've enjoyed in the past where the kind you throw a lot of money into and get absolutely no money out of (like my massive vintage videogame collection).

I'd be making much more money than I am currently if only Adult Webcomics was up and running. Not enough, I would think, to make a living off it, but enough to actually see some nice profit and possibly use to bankroll other projects.

Speaking of which... I just realized I've got to send Keen their cut of recent advertising sales on GGC! Yipe!

Working on it. It's part of my current top-priority project of relaunching MT, girlamatic, serializer and graphic smash with a revised version of the WCN codebase (that same revision will be used for AdultWebcomics).

This Engine Thread is related

This thread on Warren's Engine is pretty related to this post.  The last post is from January but it's noodling around the whole idea of who's making any money from webcomics.

Plus, I just like writing "Warren's Engine."

I hate them all. Especially

I hate them all.

Especially Ryan North.

And the guy who does Exploding Dog, if he ever does it full-time.

North doesn't even have to draw!
And the Exploding Dog guy barely draws, and doesn't have to write crap!

It's a little-known fact

It's a little-known fact that North does indeed draw. And it's really hard. He draws each and every Dinosaur Comics installment by hand. Doing artwork that consistently is the sign of a true craftsman.

Whispered Apologies

While I've been a total dick regarding Dinosaur Comics (it's just not for me), Whispered Apologies is really fucking cool. REALLY fucking cool. What this has to do with anything, I don't know. Your comment sent me on a tangent when I should be inking, so I thought I'd share.
