Problems With Alexa For Tracking Site Popularity

J.R. lays out the problems with Alexa for tracking a site's popularity. Not really any news there. But he also pitches an open source (or at least open API) version of it and that I think could lead to something more useful. It really is a problem that needs a better answer then we have available now.
