Harvey Award Nominations Released

The Harvey Awards have released their list of nominations for 2006.

BEST ONLINE COMICS WORK

Also of interest is the nomination for Flight vol. 2 in the anthology category, Kazu Kibuishi's Daisy Kutter in "Best Graphic Album - Previously published" and James Kochalka's Super f*ckers in the category "Special Award for Humor in Comics".

It Depends

I'm not really sure what this award is looking to reward precisely. Comics like Achewood, American Elf, and PBF tend to push what webcomics are in a creative sense, whereas PvP and PA (though I love them) are more pioneers of webcomics as a business.

I don't think many people would argue that PBF has higher quality art, and probably better writing than PvP, for instance. However, as a lightning rod for webcomics discussion, and as a developer of webcomics readership, PvP is clearly more important.

As far as I understand it,

As far as I understand it, the Harveys are supposed to be about artistic accomplishment, rather than commercial success -- not to say that the two don't sometimes go hand in hand -- they certainly do -- but the awards are supposed to be solely concerned with the one, regardless of the other. No awards system is perfect, of course, and ultimately most awards, especially in the comics world, end up being a compromise between what's popular enough to get lots of votes and what's truly great. Best-case scenario, you get a winner that is both popular and truly great. Worst-case scenario, people just vote for the thing they're most familiar with, and find least objectionable, because they can't be bothered to go any deeper than that (I know that's what I do half the time, when I vote in these things!)

I'm surprised Overcompensating and/or Scary-Go-Round and/or Diesel Sweeties didn't get a nod -- seems to me that the Harvey crowd (which corresponds kind of with the "big-name alternative comics" crowd, I think -- mostly I've seen the Harveys pimped on the TCJ.com boards, for example) should probably overlap more with the Dumbrella audience than with the Penny-Arcade audience (which I've always thought consisted mostly of videogame industry insiders and hardcore gamers, not comic book readers, so much).

But I guess that just goes to show that I'm a stupidhead.

It's not rocket science. If

It's not rocket science. If a strip gives the Web audience something new once or a few times, it doesn't build any momentum. If it gives the Web audience something many times over a year, it does build momentum.

Hard To Argue With These

Harveys are based on "comics professional" so in that sense they're not that different than the Oscars. These are all quality webcomics which also have decent to more than decent audience numbers. I suppose it's not a "surprise" but I find it hard to fault picking any of them.

I don't know how voters in the final round are going to pick between them though - they're all quite different (PBF and Achewood may have the greatest overlap in sensibilities but even they're quite different animals).

It does seem like serialized webcomics dominate many awards that recognize comics online. I'm not entirely sure of the reasons for this although I have my ideas.

Are humor comics outside of what they've normally recognized?Â

Why the surprise?Â
