Why Steve Kurtz shouldnt talk anymore.

I will probably edit this later once I am fully awake but I thought I would start the ball rolling on this issue. To be blunt I really didnt appreciate how Kurtz talked about the catholic church. First off it seems to be the same old light, someone close dies, person falls off world; same thing happened to me but I got back on the horse after awhile becuase things made sense. I realize its his opinion and he just didnt have the priests I did to help make things clear(Yes I know I am rambling but will edit later). Oh and just to make one note to people who believe his rant and don't want to look up the context or thoughts behind it, there is no idolatry in the catholic religion no matter how much it seems there is now. I should take cheap shots at the death of his mother considering he was the one to bring up the topic but I wont, becuase I have been in those shows. Anyway I vented about his views on my religion and now must bring up the main point. Why was my daily dose of comical humor interrupted by a depressed man's dislike of a certain faith? I guess thats why print comics or printed webcomics will also dominate in a way, you dont have to put up with the artist's rant while reading the comic, sure I could look away but its there and from the rants I have seen they usually are interesting about Net news. IF anything his rant seems to be a cry for help, a way to hit back at his own family while dragging us into the his dark abyss that he calls life, somewhat suggested in his title "Dad, I'll see you Sunday to discuss this further." Well I will go back and edit things later but just want to say thanks to mr.kurtz who lost one more reader, I know it doesnt mean much but I think it should.

I am fine with artists

Not Steve Kurtz?

EricMillikin's picture

Hey Everyone.

Joey: Thanks for explaining why this discussion has been so confusing. For the record, all of my comments above, including those about performance artists promoting the breeding of mutant house flies, were about STEVE Kurtz. Whether they may also apply to other members of the extended Kurtz family, I have no idea.

Kristofer AirsickMoth: I apologize for suggesting your comments about your monthly grooming bills were off-topic; if the topic of this thread is a different member of the Kurtz family, then your $2.95 monthly hair-care bill may in fact be somehow on-topic? I am not as familar with Scott Kurtz's work as I am with Steve Kurtz's. Is the economics of hairstyling a common theme of Scott Kurtz's work?

Gianna: I may be wrong, but I think you can say "fuck" on this board without the asterisks.

William: You spelled "penis-extension" wrong. Look for me to bring this up in completely unrelated message board conversations from now until the end of time as an example of why you are stupid and should never be listened to. "Well of course you think Foucault's 'microphysics of power' is an outdated concept. You can't even spell 'penis-extension.'"

PvP Scott: You say that you believe that Horatio is calling you "Steve" for the same reason that you believe William and Joey have called you "Scooter." What is this reason? And what, if anything, do you gain from trying to guess the intent of people's comments, rather than simply dealing with the content of their comments?

Horatio: Expecting artists not to say what's on their mind is kind of silly; that's what we do for a living.

Xerexes: I think a few posts actually have disappeared from this thread -- I seem to recall a tangent along the lines of "You can't read!" "No, you can't spell!" which wasn't all that worthwhile but seems to have gone AWOL.

Peace, hugs and kisses,
Eric

This should be a mandatory koan for "webcomics community members" to ponder -- maybe for five or six years, whatever, as long as is necessary -- before they are allowed to post on messageboards.

Steve Kurtz

Joey Manley's picture

We simply have a miscommunication.

Steve Kurtz is a performance artist and professor who is allegedly being harrassed by (or simply being reasonably investigated by, depends on who you listen to) the FBI.

Scott Kurtz is a popular webcomic artist.

I'm pretty sure that Horatio meant the former (given the title of his post), and intended to post his message on the ArtForum messageboard, not here.

I could be wrong.

So...

Xaviar Xerexes's picture

Well like I said I'm not sure how this all winds up on Comixpedia but as to your two above quotes - one is Scott Kurtz's reflection on his own life. Are you saying he has a bad memory or something? Were you there when he was growing up?

The second is a comment on a statement made by Steven Hawking - the greatest scientist alive - and the statement from Hawking has been reported in several papers of record.Â

What's your point?Â

I hate that people are giving me crap that I didnt respect his opinion, becuase I was pretty sure this line has always been there , but yeS I know its his opinion, but I dont have to agree with it right?? isnt that what kurtz did ?!? he didnt agree with the catholic church so he vented about it and I dont agree with kurtz so I am venting as well!? I didnt bash I just said I didnt agree and that people shouldnt be dragged into another person's life like that. and to the guy at the top, kurtz does bash the catholic church!: " The idolatry of the religion. It seems we spent more time looking towards saints, Mary and the Pope than God." Lets just end this here, I was wrong to have a counter opinion and even more stupid to post it publicly and should vent in silence for now own, Kurtz sorry for insulting you but I didnt believe you gave a fair trial for the Catholic church.

Why Title It "Kurtz Shup Up" then

Xaviar Xerexes's picture

Horatio - while I've not doubt some of the commenters just disagree with you others - including myself now - are pretty taken aback by the way you titled your article. Since you titled it as to why he shouldn't talk anymore your whole post reads like an argument as to why Scott Kurtz should be silenced. That's just not right. People have a right to speak their mind and you have a right to listen or not. You can also argue with him but when you start advocating silencing people you disagree with you haven't just crossed a line you've hopped skipped and jumped across the line while singing about it.

As far as the substance of things - I don't see why Scott Kurtz can't write what he wants on his site. If you don't like it protest to him there or stop reading his site. I'm really not sure how this winds up on Comixpedia - did you even make a good faith effort to tell Kurtz what you think before ranting on a public forum?

Why Steve and Kurtz shouldn't talk anymore?

Fabricari's picture

When I first saw this title I thought, "Cool, we're on speaking terms again! But why tear that apart??"

OK, so it probably wasn't the greatest PR move for Scott to discuss religion in his blog. Let's not forget Sinead O'Connor's career-ending moment on SNL. But man, that's his business.

Maybe a more constructive topic for the halls of Comixpedia would have been about the effects of such blogs on all of our comic sites. A year and a half ago I posted a lot of entries in my comic's blog not thinking anyone really read it. More like a personal journal. Sometimes it was fueled with late night depression, some fueled with jealousy, or my own fan-boy drivel. As people started showing up for the comic - there seemed to be a threshold of what I should post there anymore.

For example - I really can't post my thoughts on a fellow webcomic creator's art on my blog without taking a risk of upsetting mutual readers, or even having the artist I'm talking about read it, and assess that I'm a douche.

There's a line between personal journal and blog. Especially when people are reading it.

But regardless, it's Scott's choice to deal with the consequences. Some people will enjoy getting to know a little bit more about him. Other's will only find it to be a turn off. You can't please all of the people all the time.

"while dragging us into the his dark abyss that he calls life"

That sentence is a perfect example of the reason why I'm disgusted by bible (or insert here any other religious text) bashers of any denomination.

Besides, why do you think that the world at large should give a flying f*** of what comic you decided to stop reading? Unless yours is the old trite exercise of "lets insult a large webcomic and pray for a link". Â

Kurtz's writings are clearly satire

EricMillikin's picture
Hey Horatio, I think what you're missing is that many of Kurtz's writings are part of some fairly elaborate pieces of performace art that are pretty clearly satire when you stop and think about them. I'm not sure what he said about the Catholic Church, but I bet if you go back and re-read those statements in the context of his previous statements you'll find that they're as tongue in cheek as his earlier proposal for breeding mutant houseflies and releasing them in fast food restaurants to bring down the biotech industry.Â
I think it's great that you've had such an emotional reaction to Kurtz's performance art, and I think it's fantastic that you've decided to discuss his artwork here, but I think you need to try to have more of a thoughtful reaction as well. It's only then that you start to see the humor in it. I think the work he is doing is some of the most interesting being produced by any contemporary artist, but it requires that you approach it critically.Â

Oh, you've seen forums arguments before. I'm only referring to someone exclaiming loudly and often that they're finally leaving. Puberty can be a scary time

EricMillikin's picture
Yes, I know puberty can be a scary time for everybody, but I think that sounds weirder than usual. Maybe you should see a doctor, as there may be some sort of underlying problem with your scrotum that is causing your pubes to grow like that? This sounds like it could be a serious condition, and you definitely shouldn't be trolling for medical advice on comics message boards. Now, can we please stay on topic? Or is there some connection between Steve Kurtz and the condition of your scrotum that I'm missing?Â

Chill man

The William G's picture

Listen, know how easy it is to be angry at Scott. He's quite good at pushing buttons. However free speech requires that everyone, especially the people we disagree with, are allowed to have their say.

So yeah, right now, you have the right to point out why you're voting with your eyeballs and not reading PvP anymore. But declaring that he shouldn't express himself is the wrong approach to take.

What you should do is give your rebuttal of whatever it is he wrote. I assume the problem is that you are a Catholic? Show why he's wrong then. And if what he said (I don't care enough to go look) is a lot of Jack Chick style gobbledygook, then you can easily ignore it.

And if you're worried that there are people in his audience who just take what he says as 100% true without ever questioning things... Well, from fanboy to fundamentalist, there's no helping sheeple. So don't concern yourself with them.Â

He follows me around like a demented puppy.

I love how everyone has an opinion about what I say but are unwilling to actually READ MY WORDS. I mean, it seems a simple courtesy.

William, don't you think it's time to let go of this notion that my success hinges on my feeding pop-culutre cookies to some pliable mass of fanboys?

If it's truly that simple, why not just repeat the formula and reap the benefits. You could use you fanboy-sheep-feeding webcomic to fund your truly "artistic" endeavors. It's out there waiting for you, William. Just watch Star Wars a bunch of times over the weekend and get to work.

Clearly my readers aren't mindless zombies who agree with everything I say, nor am I content to just tell them what I think they might want to hear.

wha?

The William G's picture

I always like how someone can say, "The sky is blue." and you can turn that into, "You are the greatest evil to threaten me and mine!"

I'm beginning to thing Eric is right, and it IS all a brutally clever satire that no one's getting.

But, in case you were having trouble picking up on it, I did defend your rights, and I dismissed most of the poster's appearant concerns over your influence. The reasons for me not reading anything you have on your site are a different kettle of fish.

 Yes.

I don't think we can give you too much credit here as you didn't even get the man's name right.

Yes, you vented your views, and completely rejected the idea that SCOTT Kurtz is entitled to his own opinion, which he is entitled to post in HIS blog on HIS website. If you don't like it, then don't read it. It's just that easy.
