Clickwheel announces new CEO and Editor-in-Chief

Clickwheel, the iPod comic company, announced the appointment of Tim Pilcher as its new CEO today. Pilcher’s appointment marks a turning point for Clickwheel as the company begins creating new publishing strategies and creative alliances.

Clickwheel delivers comics, sequential art and animatics to a variety of handheld devices and online via iTunes and its own website. It is the most successful independent comics company aligned to Apple’s music store. Clickwheel’s future plans include a creative agency and unique music video development.

Tim Pilcher has over 17 years experience in publishing and has worked as an editor at DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, associate editor of Comics International, international rights manager for Dorling Kindersley Multimedia and the Ivy Publishing Group. He has also held the positions of online content licensing manager for Penguin Books and commissioning editor for Ilex Press. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including the best-selling The Essential Guide to World Comics, which he co-wrote with Brad Brooks.

Tim Pilcher stated, “I was instantly won over by Clickwheel’s unique proprietary software delivering comics and digital art content via the Internet, iTunes, iPod and other handheld devices. I truly believe this is the holy grail of comics; taking the added benefits of webcomics (color, sound, part-animation) and making them as portable and accessible as their print counterparts.”

“Clickwheel is on the cusp of some very exciting creative and business opportunities and I look forward to driving both forward and working with the many talented writers, artists, publishers, developers, musicians and all sorts of digital creatives out there to produce a brand new art form. Comics have constantly evolved over the last 150 years and I’m delighted that Clickwheel is driving forward the latest incarnation.”

Will Simons, Clickwheel’s founder and Technical and Innovations Manager said, “Tim’s appointment is a huge step-up for the company, one that allows us to explore a host of new possibilities and markets. Not only does he bring a wealth of business and editorial experience but, just as importantly, a commitment to and passion for the art itself, the comics. Further, I’m in no doubt at all that Tim will make my job a whole lot easier… and, crucially, enjoyable as he’s a great guy. I’m looking forward to working with him”

I think it would really benefit comic creators and readers alike if we could off up our comics to a service that could be read by any media capable handheld device.Â

iPods have a great marketing campaign behind them, but they're the wrong way to do portable music. A flashdrive with a built in media player is the right way. Combine that with a nice RSS-processing podcatcher (that handles vidcasts and comics and whatever) and you've got all the convenience of apple's solutions with none of their restrictions.
