Wondermark Goes to the Onion

Table of Malcontents reports that vintage clip art webcomic Wondermark will be appearing in the print version of the Onion. I don't recall what the subscription numbers for the print version are actually. It might not be as big a deal as being featured on the website version.

I saw it!

I'm a Madison native (Where the Onion started as a student publication) I was floored when I saw Wondermark in The Onion this week! The Onion isn't a subscription paper per se, it's given away free at just about any store that wants to be cool in any of the cities with a distribution. You CAN subscribe to it too, if you live in a city that doesn't get it, but you might as well read it online.Â

The Onion is also running Cathy in Spanish, for some reason.

Anyway, way to go Malki! !

Is it funny in Spanish? Because God knows it's not in English. :)

Oh, and congrats Dave (a.k.a. Malki). I totally forgot to say that before.Â

I've only seen one week's comic page, so I can't be certain. It featured Cathy and her husband running around shooting sweat out of the sides of their faces and yelling in Spanish.Â

I think the punchline is really the fact that The Onion has it in there ironically. It's making fun of Cathy and giving the syndicate money at the same time!

Back when it was a student publication, The Onion ran a comic called "Jim's Journal", which was a journal comic with no punchlines. The funny came from the fact that you were expecting a joke, and there just wouldn't be one.

It's a pretty huge deal,

It's still a pretty huge deal, actually: According to a February press release (via a Gawker article), The Onion's circulation is over a million copies. In many cities (Madison, Chicago and New York, among others), the Onion is given away as a free weekly.
