More Rich Stevens Interview Action!
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on September 8, 2006 - 09:11
Tom Spurgeon has a good one up and now even the biz mag Red Herring is getting in on the Diesel Sweeties action!
Hopefully not only is Ted Rall talking to more folks about coming to United Media but the Diesel Sweeties deal shocks the other syndicates into looking to the web much more seriously. For kicks and speculation who out there in webbywoodland would you want to see get a chance at a similar deal?

It just so happens though that Rich Stevens full-time job is Diesel Sweeties and it strikes me as quite a good move, when you consider the terms he's doing it under.

While I'd love to see more

While I'd love to see more webcomics transition to newspapers, it doesn't change the fact that it's a lot of hard work, (syndicates don't want "reprint" stuff of things you've had online already) -- and there's very little money in it. Many syndicated cartoonists have full time jobs and they do their syndicated comics on the "side"
I suggest anyone seriously thinking about newspaper syndication pick up the book YOUR CAREER IN THE COMICS by lee nordling:
If you read that book and see the bleakness of it, well, the TRUTH in it, times it by like 3 or 4 now, and if you still want to be in papers, give submissions a whirl and get in line.
Unless you know someone. :)

Shaenon Garrity

The first person who comes to mind is probably Shaenon Garrity. I would imagine there's little doubt she has the discipline to work ahead of schedule and the chops to come up with a great strip for newspapers (whether it would be Narbonic Redux or something else entirely)Â

Shaenon is too modest. She thinks she can't draw (!!!). Also, I think Viz probably pays her several million dollars a year or more.

Tatsuya Ishida, who would immediately become one of the best artists on any newspapers' page. Despite the raunchier aspects of Sinfest there is plenty in his work that could fit in a newspaper without any editing at all and I suspect given a Rich Stevens-like deal Ishida could easily adapt to life in the newspaper.

He's been trying to get his cat and dog duo into syndication for years now hasn't he? He used to collect rejection letters and post them on his site.

Tatsuya Ishida seems very reclusive so I don't know if anyone knows but I doubt he's actively tried for syndication in many years -(the letters are not up on the new sinfest site but I recall all of those rejection letters were from 2000ish). I think he was just way ahead of his time and probably didn't have his massive web audience or archives when he was pursuing syndication.
