Personally, I look forward to the day where it isn't "NEWS" that a superhero is gay. With people so openly bashing the idea of a gay superhero, it just goes to support the idea that gay bashing is the last acceptable form of discrimination. Anyway, check out the news story on the link below. Be sure to watch the video for reaction from the people on the street.
While the cynic in me thinks this is just a way for DC Comics to get some attention, I suppose the debate that follows could maybe enlighten some people.
Though the cynic in me doubts it.

This is a very crass move on DC's part to drum up some controversy and sales. I'm not digging on the return of Batwoman, gay or not. I mean, come on: Batwoman? Just staring at the word here one my computer screen, it looks pretty retarded. I thought we were past the era in which every popular superhero had to have a hastily-conceived, lame alternate-gender counterpart.
Besides, they should really call her She-Bat, anyway.

I'm not sure why DC felt it
Insofar as the Bat-"family" needs a strong female character, it already has Huntress whose dynamic with Batman works really well. There was no need to (re-)introduce a Batgirl and even less need to bring back a Batwoman ... especially in the aftermath of the bloated Infinite Crisis nonsense which - among its various stated aims - was supposed to streamline the number of superfluous costumed do-gooders in the DCU.
If DC wanted a gay character, they already have Renee Montoya and her story - as told in Gotham Central - is superb. Can't help feeling they'll cheapen that, once she becomes one of the new Batwoman's partners.
Mark my words. It'll all end in tears ... :)

Why the comment about
Why the comment about discrimination? One guy in the video who most likely isn't into comics at all mentioned that he didn't like gay people using the main "gays suck!" perspective and earned himself an argument, and if comic fans take issue with the decision, it probably won't be because they have a strong dislike for attractive lesbians, and because of that the enlightening debate that follows will probably just teach them that Cassie Cain is actually only kind of cool maybe instead of really awesome.

The clip on TV had more than one person complaining. I wasn't able to see if the clip online was the same, as I was having firewall issues. However, as the article says:
"The outing of Batwoman created a furor of opinions on Web sites devoted to DC Comics. Opinions ranged from outrage to approval."
I'm also getting other reports from my readers telling me of people griping. And from my own experience, when I have defended the rights of gay people, I have drawn criticism from some of my more right-wing readership.Â

Yeah, I only saw the video on the website. But while they may have recieved a range of responses, there's really no telling what kind of responses those were, and more likely then not they were the normal fantype responses, like DAJB's - one which relates to the influence the change will have on the comic as well as the creative motivation: a group of characters designed with increasing diversity in mind doesn't instill confidence in readers about how things will turn out. Doesn't have much to do with the character being gay, and if things turn out great the fans will say "whoops!" and get angry when the character is written out a few years down the line. hey.
