WEBCOMICS IDOL - A Bomb Shelter Comics Contest!

Sean C's picture

Bomb Shelter Comics is proud to announce our biggest contest to date - Webcomics Idol. We're taking open submissions now, and after we go through them, we'll narrow the field down to ten finalists. After that, the fun really begins!

The finalists must produce a weekly update to be judged by our esteemed guest judges, who include:

  1. Tim Demeter - Graphic Smash
  2. Daku - Digital Strips
  3. DJ Coffman - Yirmumah, Hero by Night
  4. A BSC member or two

Each week, the judges will review and critique the finalists based on their updates, and then the public will vote on their favorite. Each week, the comic with the lowest number of votes gets eliminated.

Now here's the real kicker, the prize itself. Not only will the winner be declared the Webcomics Idol, they will recieve membership into the collective, free hosting and their own subdomain at the site, (The winner may transfer their domain, if they choose to.) and a website (re)design!

We're opening the doors to any and all webcomics - we've even got rules set up for the DeviantArt-only folks, so don't be afraid to submit, you guys!

More details are on the site: http://www.bombsheltercomics.com

What if you don't want hosting on the collective?

I know it's a moot point since I won't win, but I wanted to ask.

Anyway, thanks for doing this, it sounds like an awesome contest. (And promotional opportunity to boot.)

Well, if you don't want to

Well, if you don't want to be hosted on the site itself, you don't have to. We'll grant you membership, web tech support, and such. We're just providing that option for folks who might not have the know how (or the funds) to pay for a unique site design. That's something we can help create.

And seriously - don't count yourself out - BSC started off with a bunch of little guys, (not that it's changed) and we like to keep that spirit alive. Anybody's got a shot as long as the effort shows - Hell, I've read one liners, and I was impressed.

Thank you for the kind words.

Just to be clear, we have to pick a single strip from our archives, right?

Nope, just send us your url

Nope, just send us your url and the other info we're requesting; we'll take the time to review the work as a whole. If you make it to the finals, then we go by weekly updates.

Should I start wearing like really tight t-shirts and speaking in a British accent?

Only if you want to, DJ

You can wear whatever you want, man. It's the internet - we just don't want the pictures - sides, since I have to act as something of a judge/host, you sure as hell won't see me in full metro gear and frosted hair, I'll tell you that.

Dear Katherine McPhee-esque contestants, I TOTALLY want pictures.

Great Idea!

This sounds like a fun idea; I hope that you get a lot of submissions. Good luck!

I'd submit my comic, but I'm planning on taking a week off while my fictional school goes on "winter break," so I know I wouldn't be able to make it through the whole contest.

Too bad, alma...

We would try to accomodate our finalists if some family emergency or something like that came up; I suppose your reason makes sense...hmm...why not try anyway? We'd have to discuss something like this, but, who knows...

As long as you might

As long as you might be willing to accommodate me, I would enjoy participating. Mainly, I wouldn't want to sign up if I knew that I couldn't make a "good faith" effort to follow through.

Count me in! Cool

Webcomics Idol....

Two questions: I'm going to end my current storyline tomorrow, take a week off with filler and other stuff, and start my new looong storyline on Nov. 4th. From there on in, I'll be doing three strips a week for a few months. It looked like you will be taking admissions till Nov. 9th. If my new storyline starts on Nov. 4th, would that be legit?

Should I enter before Nov. 4th, or wait till then?

Since I'm a Comixpedia editor, would that disqualify me in any way?

Just Wondering...

Al Schroeder III of MINDMISTRESS---think the superhero genre is mined out? Think there are no new superhero ideas? Think again.

Sure thing

If you're staying with your current comic, that's A-OK. As long as you can do a weekly update in during the finals, you're fine. You can enter as soon as you want, provided you make the Nov. 8th deadline.

And as for the whole I'm An Editor thing, we won't disqualify you at all - unless you try to intimidate us. Then we'll have to sic the dogs on you. :)

if i update multiple times a

if i update multiple times a week and make it to the final, do i get to choose what update is judged every week or is it just whatever one is the most recent when the judges look at it?

We Look at it as a Whole

We take multiple updates a week into consideration. We'll view any given week's updates as a whole - if you have a stronger strip followed by a weaker one, the good one will still count. We just ask that our finalists make one update a week so our judges will actually have something to judge.
