Tangents: American Reviewer
Tangents is putting out the call for submissions for fan-written reviews that may appear in Tangents. Write up a review and submit it to Tangentsreviews at gmail period com. Once received, the T:AR Judge's Panel consisting of Robert Howard of Tangents, Steve Anderson of Reel Advice fame (and the occasional Roundtable at Tangents), and Brett Hainley of Casual Notice will look over fan-submitted reviews. Comments about the reviews will be written up and submitted with the review.
Once four winners interested in competing in the second tier are found, they get their next challenge. All four winners must read and review the same comic, chosen by the Judge panel. The readers then will read all four second-tier reviews and vote on which one they liked the most.
The winner of the second tier can write a review on any comic they want, which will then be posted on Tangents without judge commentary or editing it outside of removing any harsh language.
New guest reviews will go up monthly, depending on the volume of accepted reviews.
* First, cartoonists cannot review their own comics.
* Second, no swearing or vulgarity in the reviews. This also goes for images used in the reviews. If there's R- or X-rated material being shown, try to blur it out. Nudity isn't necessarily R, mind you. It depends on the context.
* Third, try to have some sort of image at the start of the review. Image placement is also important. Try not to over-clutter the review with comic art as it could be held against the review.
Added suggestions (by Brett Hainley) on the review-writing process include:
* Include a synopsis of the general plot of the entire series, or, in the case of joke-a-day comics, a synopsis of the platform from which the comic makes its jokes.
* Include an objective critique of the writing. Is it funny? Should it be funny? How are characteriation, plotting, and dialogue carried off? If this comic were a book in text, would you recommend anyone read it?
* Include an objective critique of the artwork. Are character designs consistent? What is the art style? Does the artist carry off the style in a compelling fashion?
* And add some form of value judgment. "Read it", "don't read it", "read it but be prepared for disappointment", something along those lines. A review is worthless if it doesn't provide the reader with tools for making decisions.

Re: Tangents: American Reviewer
I'm seeing the word "winner" in this post - what's the prize for the winner(s)?

On second thought, let's not go to Comixpedia. It is a silly place.

In other words, if they want to review their own comic, I'm not going to say no. If they want to review something on Slipshine, I'll not say no (though I might censor sex scenes in any attached images in my quest to keep Tangents PG).
Yeah, it's not much, but half of the fun is in writing the reviews and having them put up, especially when talking about a favorite comic.
Re: Tangents: American Reviewer
Wait - so the prize is getting your review posted on the Internet?
I'm not trying to be entirely snarky but don't people post reviews of comics on their own blogs all the time now? Do the reviewers get anything from Tangents for their work?

Re: Tangents: American Reviewer
*shrug* To be honest, I'm not sure what else I could offer. My praise? My good will? Suggestions on how to create their own review blog site (which is definitely not needed as any blog software can do a better job in helping new bloggers create their own site than I can)?
I sure can't offer anyone any drawings or the like. Well, I could, but then it would be a punishment to win because my artwork sucks. If you can suggest a better reward, I would gladly listen to it. Considering I don't have a Paypal account, and don't exactly have the finances to buy rewards of some sort, that kind of limits the options, unfortunately.
