depending on you art, I'd say photoshop is the best tool.

What I recomend is if your serious about your foray into the digital art world: buy a wacom tablet. The lower end models are reasonably priced and i find suficient for most work. They also come with Photoshop Elements and Painter Pro elements.

Both are kinda stripped down versions of the two, but I find still superior to what the gimp has to offer.

This way you kill two birds with one stone.

I use Photoshop to color my webcomic, and well for everything I use.

I have GIMP on my laptop because I can't afford another copy of photoshop and I like it for somethings, but it really seems to be lacking in others. It is a great open source program. But theres alot of small things that I think I might just be used to in Photoshop that are all different in GIMP.

The GIMP is a great open-source solution to your problem, but for future reference please keep in mind that the GIMP does not support CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, yellow, Black). This may create problems for you if you ever want to print a dead-tree edition of your comic. If not, don't worry about it.

The GIMP is an eight-bit program. Photoshop is a sixteen-bit program. That means you will get some color depth from Photoshop that you will not get from the GIMP. Again, if you don't need it, don't worry about it and enjoy the absolute freedom of the GIMP.

GIMP is good especially it being open source.

As far as I know most people use Photoshop. It's an extremely powerful program, and has a handy Save for Web feature. I've heard wonderful things about Painter as well, but I've never personally colored a page with Painter.

Photoshop, if you can. GIMP if you can't.

I'll probably get razzed for suggesting it, but I've been using GIMP for 2 years now and it's been good to me (although I'll admit to a handful of program crashes that forced me to start over on a comic again). GIMP is free open source software that you can get at www.gimp.org, and it does pretty much what Photoshop does.

If you have the money, though, go for Photoshop.
