where do you get your inspiration

Just wondering where all of you get your ideas for your comics. Things that happen to you? People you know? Just make it all up?

from real life and it's problems and strange events. My intention at best is to solve these things in a few panels disregarding reality, but most of the time I just re-tell them.

I just steal everything from Ghostbusters.

Because "Diary of a Shuriken" makes moderately less sense.

Honestly, I just get these stories in my head. And usually they're the kind I don't normally (or ever) see in comics. I figure, if it's something I want to see, I better get on with making it because nobody else seems to want to.

Definitely from friends. But also, being a teacher, I see and hear a lot of great stuff from the students at school. And finally, just the process of drawing, and translating what I hear into something new, is what inspires me and keeps me interested. I think sometimes the best ideas--even for a non-punchline oriented comic--come from human observation. That can turn into one of Family Circus's four jokes ("Kids say the darnedest things") but if I stream-of-consciousnessly riff off of it instead of go for the obvious joke, it's more enjoyable for me and maybe more interesting for readers. It's that process part of it that inspires me to keep cartooning.

Most of my ideas... do come from real life experiences, or real life things that I read about on the internet. Like TricksterKing, it might come from a conversation me and my friends have (we get into weird conversations...). Sometimes I just feel creative and I just make stuff up.

Just write, or draw anything to start when you don't have an idea. It just works itself out in the end... in my experiences anyway.

Lots of luck.

Re: where do you get your inspiration

i don't know if its alwasy some much finding inspiration, but rather tapping into it. some people are really gifted with being able to go right into that and don't need to find it, but then again i think everyone knows those blocks that holt the process. for me, i tend (as every creator does) to put myself into my work, whether in writing or behavior and sometimes that is as far as you need to look. on occasion i won't know where to go and it helps to have characters and stories that write themselves in a way. but sometimes i just look around, look back at my day and start play with ideas. it is true, anything can be an inspiration, but it depends on the person, i think the real key is not giving up.

A little from each, really. Sometimes something ridiculous will happen that I think would make for a good comic. Sometimes it's a conversation with a friend. And sometimes a joke or gag (or even an entire storyline) manifests itself, seemingly from nowhere.

I find that a good way to cope with writer's block (cartoonist's block?) is to just start drawing the first panel and let the story or page tell itself. A lot of absurdities come from this (this is the basis of the entire Face! run, which runs on Sundays at Living with Toys), but it works to relax the brain.
